OK, I just have to say this right of the bat here today…this is ridiculous! Look at the amount of ice still hugging the Lake Superior shore there at Grand Marais beach. Bill Lahti, a first time Pasty Cam contributor and former Calumet Yooper sent these in and said that they were taken last weekend while they were here visiting in the U.P.
I still can't believe it, even with this photographic proof and Bill standing there at the edge of the ice to show the comparison of the size of that ice that is hanging on there. He said that it goes out at least 40 feet and 4 to 5 feet deep at the thickest part. I wonder when this will all completely melt away there. Too bad we can't get a daily or weekly report from the same spot until it is gone ;-)
Have a safe and happy Memorial Day weekend!

I would definitely take a little snow/ice on the lakeshore compared to our weather recently... waaaaaayy too much rain!!

Great photos, thanks for the ice report, Bill! I follow the spring ice break-up on the upper Great Lakes every year using as many web cams and satellite images as possible. Looking at last weekend's MODIS satellite images, it was hard to tell if there was any ice on the shore at Grand Marais or not, because those images just don't have the resolution to show things as narrow as the ice Bill photographed. It's great to have on-the-scene reports. There's still quite a bit of ice in Agawa Bay over on the eastern end of Lake Superior, and you can see it on the high-resolution web cam at Montreal River Harbour. Remember last year, when there was still ice in Keweenaw Bay on June 7? (I'm pretty sure Edie and Charlie shot video of it on that date).

A little bit of pack ice on the shoreline is better than last year... There was still plenty of ice on the Lake proper in Duluth for Memorial Day, and plenty of ships waiting to get berths, cargo, pilots or all three due to delays the heavy ice had caused.
I have a feeling this will end the day before the first snowfall in November.
