Taana Kalliainen lives in Chassell on the shores of the Portage River, near the Lower Entry Lighthouse, so photos like today's are an everyday occurrence for her, lucky lady!
She spotted several families of geese on the calm, reflecting water this foggy morning and couldn't resist capturing some family portraits of them all. I wonder if they'll order any prints from her? ;-)It sure is nice to see the spring babies out and about with their parents, learning the ropes of surviving on the rivers and lakes here UP North.
Taana also captured some amazing shots of a small island on the river. With the fog that day, it looks isolated and almost like the water and surrounding sky join together and become one. Taana mentioned that there are several boats left there on the island and listed the names of them for us, too.
From left to right:
The Seagull who was owned by John Fallon
The Doughboy who was last owned by Uncle Emil Kalliainen
The Rambler who was owned by cousin Richard Kalliainen.
I know that there is one more in the middle of the island but no info on that one.
A number of people commented on her photo, saying that they remembered playing on this island as children. I can only imagine the scenarios they must have created in their minds playing out there and going back and forth to the little strip of land by boat. What a creative way to spend your summer days!
Speaking of creative, when talking with Taana about her foggy photos, she told me that morning reminded her of the poem from Carl Sandburg about the fog coming in on cat's feet, so I thought that would be a good way to leave you today:
Fog
BY CARL SANDBURG
The fog comes on little cat feet.
It sits looking over harbor and city on silent haunches
and then moves on.
