While out on her adventures last week, Brenda Leigh was driving County Road H58 between Munising and Grand Marais, when she spotted today's subject out of the corner of her eye. She wondered what on earth these folks had in their yard, so of course she had to turn around and investigate.
This is what she found: Its name is Merlin and it is an Avian Radar Unit that is used by the United States Fish and Wildlife Service, to study bird and bat migration along the Great Lakes in the spring and fall. The sign says that the migration season is one of the most deadly times of year for birds and bats, so understanding how and where they move during this time, can help us to protect them.
That's pretty interesting and quite the sophisticated way to study their migratory habits. If you'd like more information about this process, check out the following link: Avian Radar Project.

Not what I'm used to seeing from Brenda, lol. But leave it to Brenda to come upon something like this. Good job, Brenda!

I had no idea. Sure is a bit more sophisticated than standing on a bluff counting them. Learn something new everyday the old folks say:)

I don't trust it...where's my aluminum cranium cap and asbestos-lined, camouflage underwear? The camo is for sitting in my tree blind...beauty, eh? :-)
