As promised, Brenda Leigh takes us over to the Au Sable Lighthouse, that we could see peeking out of the trees in one of yesterday's photos.

Reading the Information board that was actually over at the Log Slide, it says that the trail to the Lighthouse is a pleasant 3 mile hike, which would indicate that the trail isn't too rough. Looks to be a well kept light station and back in the logging days, its primary purpose was to be there to warn the captains and other mariners of the dangers of the Au Sable sandstone reef, which in some places if only 6 feet below the water surface.

This is an active lighthouse, located on the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. It can also be accessed from the Hurricane River Campground, which is 12 miles west of Grand Marais on Alger Country Road H-58. There is a day use parking area located there. From the parking area, it is a 1 ½ mile walk to the lighthouse on the U.S. Coast Guard historic road. Along the walk in, you'll find shipwreck remains on the beach below the trail, some that are exposed. There are signs directing you to the steps for beach access along the trail, so that you can check out the shipwrecks as you make your way to the Light Station.

Those remains illustrate the fury and power that Lake Superior possesses, along with a reminder that the Big Lake should always be respected when you're going out in her waters. She can go from calm to rough in just a short time.

Great hike back there! The main path is over the old access road which is level. And you can also hike along the lake and see the shipwrecks close up.

Sounds like fun. We've done a lot of hiking
today, too. We hiked Gooseberry Falls, went to
Split Rock lighthouse and some other things. Lots
of fun crammed into a few hours. Tomorrow we go
into Duluth to take the historic train that runs
up the North Shore to see things from that angle.
Like Brenda, I love sightseeing and taking
pictures. Thanks, Brenda. That's someplace I'm
not sure I'll ever get to.

What an outstanding way to spend a weekend, Deb!

You'll have to let us know how the train trip goes!
