Track and Field here in the Keweenaw gets a slower start, due to the amount of snow that is still on the tracks in the spring when practices start, but by now they're all cleared and the races have begun. Today's photos from Gary Lassila were snapped during a recent meet in Houghton, involving a number of our local schools.
I love how he's captured the sheer determination on the young people's faces, the pursed lips while pushing off with the pole vault, the eyes focused on the finish line, the concentration while running all out and the look of "I made it" as the finish line it crossed. It all shows how hard these kids work to be the best they can be. Good lessons for later in life when they out in the world working, to give whatever you do, your all.

I loved being on the girl's track team in my school days! I ran the 100 yd dash in 12.3 seconds. I attribute my fast times from being a farm girl chasing the cattle when they got out or running away from the bull charging.
