Jeff Stricker was on hand over on the Coal Dock Road between Ripley and Dollar Bay, where these antenna towers were getting some repairs. Jeff tells me that the towers are owned by Michigan Tech University now, but were at one time owned by AT&T for telephone relay. On the day he snapped these photos, repairs were made to the obstruction lights, the amateur radio repeater antenna and several public service antennas. Also included on these twin towers is a transmitter for WMTU-FM and a relay for Minnesota Public Radio, WGGL-FM.

Jeff reports that the work got off to a good start that day, as you can see the gentleman making the climb up the towers here, but then it had to be postponed due to an increase in the wind. Now, I don't know about you, but I know that I don't think I'd enjoy being up on either of those towers on a calm day. Add the wind in and there's no way I'd go UP there, no matter how good the view is.

Our Webmaster, Charlie Hopper would have no problem with the climb, though. I searched the archives, but couldn't find the picture of Charlie up high on a similar tower making repairs to the Pasty.NET Internet relay. He's also climbed a number of steeples, been up to the top of the Quincy Mine Shaft, up inside the clock tower of the Calumet Theatre and high off the ground at Mt. Horace Greeley when relays for Pasty.NET needed some fixing. I guess you could say that climbing to high places is "right up his alley".

Right there with ya, Deb!!!

Glad for the folks who it doesn't bother tho!

I have fear of heights, so the mere thought of being way up there makes me queasy. Ugh!!!!

By the way - I like the pic with the moon in the background. The others are too unsettling.

That type of high needs a constant fix...once you try it, you're hooked (to the tower) :-)

Not the job for me. I don't like heights at all. I don't even like widths very much. My hat goes off to the climber who ever he may be.

I agree with you about the moon pic, Jose, and am in agreement with all of you about fear of heights ~ makes my feet tingle just looking at that tower-climber.:<
