Marquette Harbor is once again busy with freighter traffic and Danielle Adams was on hand one evening last week to capture these night shots. There was still a quite a bit of ice in the Harbor there and the reflections of all the lights on the water and glowing in the air gives the ship an ethereal feeling.

Danielle said the Herbert C. Jackson was there loading ore for transport. If you recall last week the eastern end of Lake Superior was completely iced in, so the freighters were having a slow go of things. Hopefully after the Jackson was loaded and ready to get out on the Big Lake again, the sailing was moving along better. Sure is nice to see these boats back out there sailing the Great Lakes again.

how up close and personal is that.....great pictures

It's crazy the day before there wasn't a spec of ice to be found
probably within a mile of shore, then the winds blew a bunch in
overnight and the Jackson was having a hard time docking
because of the ice.

Great Lakes shipping season once again.

I believe he is (or is that she ) is unloading not loading. The boom is out and at the tower.

The night time pictures are cool!

Great pictures of the harbor lights. I think the lights magnify the beauty of the ore docks and the boats. The ice being there is a nice touch also. Thanks for sharing Danielle.

I agree, Janie, I like night pix, especially with freighters.

James, they were loading. The only boat that has unloaded at
the upper harbor has been the Mesabi Miner, with two loads of
coal. The Jackson has their boom swing out so the chutes
can come down and load them and the boom isn't in the way.
I know they loaded for a fact as I stood out there for almost an
hour watching them load.

And if they were unloading they'd be further up...the book is
behind the hopper....
