The clouds in 2005 are beautiful!

Come on folks, give it a go. Put Ontonagon on the map and vote for the Porkies.

It really is hard to go against the Porkies for the favourite state park, but I must say Valley of Fire SP in Nevada is an awesomely gorgeous place to visit as well. I can't believe it isn't higher on the list.....

Great pictures again today.

By Greta Jones (Urbanescapees) on Sunday, March 15, 2015 - 01:08 am:

Nice photos today, as usual.

Hey Capt. Paul, I agree with you, I also like the Porkies, and the Valley of Fire SP is amazing, but I vote for the North Coast California Redwoods State Parks. Folks, if you've never stood in a Redwood Grove, you have missed one of life's great experiences. These trees are ancient and awesome beyond words.

There are so many amazing works of nature on this planet, it should not be narrowed down to one being the Best.

Don't wish to be controversial, just my humble opinion.

Sorry, I thought this was a Yooper forum.

Mary says: Actually, the What'sUP page is not just strictly for posting about the U.P., it's for general conversation, etc.

Our "Acceptable Use Policy" states it like this:
"In 2004 we distinguished comments related to the daily picture (Cam Notes) from other miscellaneous conversation in a new feature called "What'sUP". Occasionally the conversation on this supplemental page will include topics other than strictly U.P. related. On the daily "Cam Notes" picture page, please keep comments on the topic, and use "What'sUP" to post other items of interest, such as community event's, suggestions, and general conversation."

It's about voting, and the Porkies aren't the only
ones on the list. These people are just stating
that the Porkies isn't the only great state park
out there. Everybody has their preferences.

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Sunday, March 15, 2015 - 10:26 am:

I know what you mean, Greta, I've stood among some of California's redwoods! An awesome sight!!

By Waveaction (Lakelover) on Sunday, March 15, 2015 - 10:46 am:

Didn't mean to ruffle any feathers. Just trying to help Ontonagon get back on it's feet through tourism.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Sunday, March 15, 2015 - 11:19 am:

And I'm pretty sure that the people who visit this
site are voting for the Porkies. They're just
saying that there are other great ones out there,
too.

By Greta Jones (Urbanescapees) on Monday, March 16, 2015 - 02:22 pm:

Thank you Mary for clarifying again the What's Up page rules.
And thank you Deb for your perfect statements that reflect exactly what I mean.
And Shirley too - you've been there too? I know you understand what I mean.

No problem at all, Greta 😊

Oh lookie, there's that mysterious "😊" again!

That string of 'digits' is the ASCII code for a 'special character'.

To see what that character is, you can put the same string of six 'digits' in the form of a "formatting tag" (a special 'instruction' that the forum's message parsing engine will recognize), causing the underlying 'special character' to be displayed when the the message text is posted, like so:

So if you write it like this: \char{128522}
… then it will look like this: 😊 when the message is posted.

Oh lookie, it's a smiley!

FRNash! You're a genius 😊

I don't see a smiley :-(

There's one in your previous post!

P.S.: The only really sneaky trick is how to tell the parsing engine to just show the "formatting tag" as plain text without translating it into the "secret" special character. (As I did in my earlier message.)

To do that just put an extra "\" immediately in front of the formatting tag, with no space, which tells the parsing engine to "ignore this",

thus: \\char{128522}
which then appears in the posted message
thus: \char{128522}

Using the formatting tag without the extra "\" allows the translation to occur, and
yields: 😊

… as your previous post demonstrates.
