When Melanie Hakala Rossi and friends were up in Copper Harbor last week, they found bare ground at Fort Wilkins on the parade grounds in the middle of the buildings. There was still snow in front of the cabins before you get into the actual Fort grounds, which is actually the cross country ski trail that goes through the park.

A look at Lake Fanny Hooe, which the Fort borders, shows an icy sheet of great skating ice, since it looks so smooth. Melanie mentioned that her next exploration trip UP there, she's going to bring her ice skates and give it a try.

The last two photos were snapped from the Lighthouse lookout at the Harbor, which you can see is still iced in. Not only iced in, but there are still some quite large "volcano" mountains nearer the shore. Look at how small the person and the dog are in that last photo and you'll realize how big that hill of snow and ice really is.

Such stark differences in the snow cover and both locations are literally just across the road from each other. I think the Fort parade grounds must be more sheltered from accumulating much snow and then it receives the heat of the sun from morning until later in the day, so it melts off there quicker

Love the log housing.

Hi
Another factor could be that the snow in the cross-country ski trails was packed down harder and would melt more slowly.

I think Ft. Wilkins is a neat place. Does anyone know if people fish in Lake Fanny Hooe and if so what kind of fish do they catch?

By D. A. (Midwested) on Monday, March 30, 2015 - 10:49 pm:

Your best chances are for either Yellow Perch or
Smallmouth Bass. You can also look for some
Walleye and native trout species (Rainbow, Brook,
etc.).

I saw that but thought it was the big doggie that's seen in the 3rd and 6th photos.
