Today's photos are from Stacey and Jim Flood, owners of the Oak Street Inn here in Calumet. They took a drive to Eagle River to check out the beach there and found a number of these little sand towers with rocks balancing on top of them and even an icy funnel on another. It is quite amazing, what nature can create with the power of the winds.

They also found how the different colors of beach sand had swirled together to make a unique and artsy display that would be perfect, framed and gracing someone's wall. Then further along there were some Superior stones on the shore that just held a dusting of snow, so they were all there exposed and ready for throwing and skipping. But of course, Stacey and Jim's last two photos show you that it will be some time before there will be any rock throwing on the shores of Eagle River.

Looks like the photographer went prostrate to get
those first shots - GREAT work! Eye level is so
very interesting!
God's creation in it's finest; what a winter it
has been! But season DOES follow season. I'll bet
everyone will enjoy seeing & hearing "drip, drip,
drip, drip" etc this week! :)

Very unique pictures, thanks for sharing them. The last one looks like the UP's version of the Badlands.

Personally I think the Lord is "funning with us" plus a lot of art work hey? Thanks for anything you folks find for us. THANK YOU !

Fascinating pictures..... especially the 'mushroom' and 'funnel'. Now we need someone to explain what is happening there to create the 'stems'!

Just can't beat Mother Nature's artistry!

By Frederic W. Koski (Fred) on Monday, March 9, 2015 - 02:39 pm:

The 4th one must be "agate beach"?

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Monday, March 9, 2015 - 09:02 pm:

Easy!
The material on top is more resistant to erosion than what is around it, thus you get stems. It's basically the same process that forms hoodoos in places such as Bryce Canyon and elsewhere on the Colorado Plateau.
