Bob Gilreath and his wife, Liz, were on their way home from a weekend of watching Michigan Tech Huskies basketball games at Lake Superior State University, driving along with the outside temperature at -8° and a wind chill of -30°. Now most people would be content in their heated vehicle, but not Bob and Liz. No, they decided it was a good day to hike into the Eben Ice Caves and that's just what they did. The second photo is the trail in, which Bob said is a 3 mile round trip.
The ice outside and in the caves is worth the hike, though, as you can see from the photos here today. The Gilreath's weren't the only ones out there braving the sub-zero temperatures. They met up with a snowmobiler from Chicago, who snapped the picture of them in front of that wall of ice. I especially like the ones Bob took looking up at the icicles. They look a bit dangerous, like daggers pointing down at you.
The bottom photo is from a newcomer here on the Pasty Cam, Paul Nelson, who is a photographer in the Marquette area. Paul said he took this photo in the ice caves near Eben at night, using a flashlight for backlighting. Pretty amazing that a flashlight can transform the ice into something so lit up and glowing! Check out Paul's Photography page for more of his work: The Creator's Hand Photography.
