No matter that I've lived here in the Copper Country my entire life, the accumulation of ice on Lake Superior's shores still amazes me. Melanie Hakala Rossi was up in Eagle River and Eagle Harbor where the shoreline looks like it could be on another planet. Just look at the size of that ice volcano compared to Melanie's friend walking up to it. It looks like a mountain itself. I wonder if there is still any water splashing up through it, when the surface is all frozen over like this.
The first two photos were snapped in Eagle River, the remaining shots, from the Lighthouse down, were taken in Eagle Harbor, where it looks like the ice formed cliffs on the shore. You can also see some smooth looking, just about clear ice out there. Melanie commented that the next time she's up that way, she may bring her ice skates and give it a try. She said there is ice for as far out as you can see. From what I hear, Lake Superior is 93% or more frozen now. If this frigid weather keeps UP here, it will be frozen over completely!

When we lived in Baraga in the 1970's the bay had some clear ice that was perfect for skating. We laced up one day and did it. It was great, but cold!

Desolate looking landscape...reminds me of the planet Hoth in the Star Wars movie.

What a change from when we were UP for Winter Carnival. I have photos where there was a lot of open water maybe a 1/4 mile offshore at Bucky's and Eagle River, but now I just heard on NPR this morning that over 97% of the lake is frozen solid. Sure wish I was still there to experience it, but sadly this morning, I'm stuck in a cold rain.....

The first photo looks like a dark-eyed snow monster, mouth open, rising from the icy sea.:>
