Nathan Miller was able to do something you can only do during the winter months…he walked on water. Frozen water, but it is still water. He was out on the Portage Canal with his Aerial Kite Photography equipment, taking in the surroundings, including Ripley, the Ranger III and its shadow and the Portage Lake Lift Bridge.

He figured if the ice was thick enough for the three snowmobiles in the third photo, it was in good shape for him and his kite, too. Just look at all the tracks on the canal from the snowmobile traffic; it looks more like a highway than a waterway this time of year.

For the bottom photo, Nathan said he had to "run, run, run", since the sun was going down and the clouds were moving in. He wanted to get a few photos of the bridge while the lighting was still good. Try running while towing a kite from the Ranger III to the Lift Bridge, it's not as easy as it sounds, slip sliding all the way.

It has been so cold the past two days. They
closed Mont Ripley early on Wednesday, and they
didn't even open yesterday. Beautiful pictures

For me it has been years since I spent a winter in the Copper Country. Back then the unknown currents of the Portage entry and lake would take one or two snowmobile drivers each winter through the many thin ice patches. What was solid ice one day would only be an inch thick the next.
