The National Weather Service had the entire U.P. under blizzard warnings Friday and Saturday, which brought us high wind gusts and substantial sustained winds, too. That meant low to no visibility, along with a number of road closures for safety around the Marquette area.

Linda Schneller took a few pictures of the blizzard conditions around Bootjack and Lake Linden on Saturday, showing the chilly looking air from their home and then the low visibility on the way to town.

Also on Saturday, Bob Gilreath and his wife Liz carefully made their way to Michigan Tech SDC for some Huskies basketball. While there he snapped a couple of shots looking out the windows at the banks that have been pushed there to clear the sidewalks around the building. Bob's pictures show how the winds plaster the blowing snow onto the windows during a blizzard event, making it look as cold as it really is outside.
For the majority of us Yoopers, it's just another day in the U.P.

Then Sunday morning, Bryant Weathers was out and about early and snapped a picture of the Superior National Bank temperature sign in Chassell, showing just how low the temps dropped during the night. Yes, that does say MINUS 27°, which doesn't include what it "feels like" with the wind chill factored in. Now that's frigid…brrrrr!

And the Boston and New England area thinks they have it tough???

Actually, northern New England does have a winter that's comparable to the U.P. Our son goes to school in Maine, and since the first of the year they have had a half dozen storms with two feet or more of snow within 24 hours, and steady north winds 30+ mph, with gusts up to 50 or 60.

During the past week they've had several overnight lows around 12-15 below, and wind chill down below -30.

That said, the national news media is quick to sensationalize the situation in large cities, where the weather may not be quite as severe.

It sure was a cold Valentine's Day weekend.
