Actually, northern New England does have a winter that's comparable to the U.P. Our son goes to school in Maine, and since the first of the year they have had a half dozen storms with two feet or more of snow within 24 hours, and steady north winds 30+ mph, with gusts up to 50 or 60.
During the past week they've had several overnight lows around 12-15 below, and wind chill down below -30.
That said, the national news media is quick to sensationalize the situation in large cities, where the weather may not be quite as severe.
