Looking at the critters in Melody Provost Holmes photos here today, I'd venture to say that she has plenty of patience in order to sit still long enough for them to come around with her nearby. I hope she was bundled up good and warm against the chill of our U.P. winter, too. How rewarding then, when she was able to capture a red and a gray squirrel together like this. Catching them side by side on the tree, really makes the difference in their sizes stand out.
Also interesting to note, is the coloring on these critters. In the first photo, the red runs like a stripe from his head to the tip of his tail and then in the second photo, the gray squirrel has a brownish stripe running down his back and bushy tail.
Melody was also lucky enough to spy a Pileated Woodpecker checking things out, before it decided to swoop in for some suet at the feeder. Then once it started digging away with that long beak, she zoomed in so close that you can even see a red feather or two out of place on the back of his head. It's always a treat to view the woodland critters as they go about their day.

Great captures of wildlife in action. The pileated is truly the king of the woodpeckers.

What kind of suet feeder is this? Looks like a mesh bag? Never seen one like this in my area.
