Today Joy Ziemnick takes us on an adventure in the Keweenaw, watching the waves crash and splash on the accumulated ice in Lake Superior. Her fist shot was taken at Great Sand Bay, where the ice is filling in along the shoreline, but nowhere near as much as last year this time. The other stops they made were at Cat Harbor and Eagle Harbor.
Joy had some perfect timing to capture the waves as they crashed and splashed over the ice covered rocks. Check out how high the spray of water goes, frozen in mid air by the camera it looks like clouds hanging just above the Big Lake. Wouldn't it be neat if the spray would freeze in mid air like that for real?

Beautiful shots, Joy ~ the third one with the lighthouse is absolutely breathtaking!

Wonderful photos, Joy, thank you! Down here in the Muskegon area, we get to see scenes like these. I'm always amazed by the power of the waves crashing into the ice and lofting literally tons of water into the air. And Mary, some of the spray does freeze in mid air for real. While most of the spray comes back down as liquid (some of which freezes and adds to the ice mounds),on really cold days the finer spray droplets freeze into snow which you can see billowing away downwind.

Beautiful photos of my favorite lighthouse! I also love the one with the waves splashing in the third picture. I know it's really hard to hold the camera still when the wind is beating down from across the harbor, even with a tripod. Great job, Joy! Thanks for sharing.

I love the third picture best too, but then I' m a sucker for lighthouses.

Those are some pretty huge splashes. The power of the waves is mind boggling. Thanks for sharing Joy.

When you see these pictures and then think back a couple days to the Life Saving Station, you can just imagine what those men went thru to save the perishing in the middle of a storm.

3rd is also my favorite for the same reason as Kosk. But what a grouping of pictures. It would have been great to be there to see this.

Spectacular photos! I love them all but especially the third one. The natural beauty of Keweenaw winters is unsurpassed.

My favorite lighthouse. When we were kids and had a place in the harbor, there was still a lighthouse keeper and he was such a nice man. Can't remember his name but he would let us go up to the top and then gave us Hersey bars.
