At this point in the winter here UP North, the deer are having a tougher time making a go of it. Philip Odum snapped these two in the Kinross area at a friend's feeder. Many of the Keweenaw deer have herded up in "deer yards", because the depth of the snow in the woods makes it difficult to move around. The area Sportsman clubs then raise money to purchase feed for them during these months they spend in the yards.
Black-capped Chickadees are the toughest little birds around and they stay here in the Keweenaw in all four seasons. They're one of my favorite birds to watch at the feeders, as they flit back and forth gathering seeds all day long.
Philip also captured a Hairy Woodpecker so close-up that you feel like you could reach out and touch those fluffy feathers on her belly and back. They visit the feeders for suet and peanut butter treats, but I think they still look for bugs that have burrowed under the bark this time of year, too. Critters of the North Country are pretty amazing!

Beautiful, Philip! I saw 'my' deer yesterday morning, bounding toward the woods just after daybreak. I don't see them often but it's good to know they're still around.

Beautiful pictures ~ the deer look to be in good shape, as do the birds!
Jbuck, yesterday there were only 3 or 4 ~ they ran so fast I wasn't sure how many.;> Saw 6 at one time last Fall, but it's usually just 3 or 4 at a time. And, unfortunately, it's not on a 'regular basis'.:<

Feeding the deer is important as in the excellent pictures you can see the ribs of the deer. That is skinny.
