Some folks think there's not much to do here in the Keweenaw when the snow is deep and the temperatures dip low, but that's just not true. Lisa Normand gives a good example of one of the cold weather activities we enjoy during the winter months.
These skiing pictures were taken at the Swedetown Trails in Calumet, where you can ski a variety of trails from easy to difficult and even a back country trail. It's a great way to get outdoors in the winter and enjoy the fresh air. Even when it's cold, you can still work up a sweat and get a good workout in, while enjoying the beauty you glide by.

Those photos are really pretty, Lisa, but I'd rather look out my windows and see the few patches of green grass still hanging around in my yard.;)

How fortunate to be a life time resident of the U.P. There are so many scenic and beautiful areas that surround us. I do miss Swedetown as I have not skied there for many years. I must admit though if I lived in Calumet that I would be on those trails daily. I have a neighbor who moved to Houghton. They are awesome outdoor folks. They now have the privilege of taking their family there. Their comment to me was as follows, "THEY ABSOLUTELY LOVE SWEDETOWN!" I am so happy for them. Thanks Lisa for the nice photos.

I've always wanted to try cross-country skiing but instead got a NordicTrac ski machine which simulates cross-country skiing. I'll have to get out and try the real thing one of these days when it's not so dangerously cold outside. We had temps in the single digits the last few days, B-R-R-R-R!!! :°)
Nice pictures!

The photos are lovely and show one of the ways in which we can get outside and embrace winter.

Hi Shirley, I have to disagree---at this time of year, I'm more than ready for skiable snow, not grass. I envy you Yoopers, those trails look great.
As Mary says, you can build up a lot of warmth doing it. I've gone out in single digit temps and just used a slightly warmer outfit than normal. I stayed in the woods and out of any open areas with strong winds, though.
