Emma Stout took these pictures near Dollar Bay, with the ice forming around the edges of Portage Lake. She called them cool, crystal designs and I would have to agree …pointed, spear like, looking clear and sharp, quite unique. That ice looks like it's reaching for the shoreline with razor sharp fingers. Reminds me of the movie character, Edward Scissorhands.
Our weather has turned back to winter here again in the Keweenaw, so if you're heading out to find more ice like this, you better dress warm…we have single digits with windchills in the negatives. And just so you know…the ice is snow covered and white by now. Thank goodness Emma was out snapping these shots before winter returned with a vengeance, otherwise we'd have missed this completely!

Amazing how things like this form naturally.

Cool...looks a little like the creeping ice that sometimes plague's the Great Lakes shore line in the spring.

Interesting … After seeing these pictures yesterday, I noticed the following little snippet from the NWS Marquette Area Forecast Discussion from 643 PM EST MON JAN 5 2015:
Quote:
"… WITH THE STRONG WINDS...EXPECT SOME BREAKING OF ANY PRISTINE DENDRITES...
(Dendrites In hydrologic terms, thin branch-like growth of ice on the water surface.)"
Dendrites a term I had never before seen in any NWS product I guess that's what we see in the above photos!
