New Year's Day-What'sUP January 2 - 10:03 pm

The shipping season here on Lake Superior has less than a month to go, so I figured it would be a good way to start 2015, with a trio of freighter shots from Brenda Leigh. She's lucky enough to live near the Big Lake and walks the shores quite often, so when the freighters are gliding by, no matter the weather, she gets to watch them go.

In Brenda's first shot, you can barely see the freighter through the falling snow. I can't imagine being out on the Lake sailing in such poor visibility. I suppose it's similar to when it's foggy, but then you have to factor in the cold air and cold Superior waters, too. It definitely doesn't seem like such a "glamorous" job in the winter weather.

The second photo looks much nicer, with the sun shining, but it is probably still freezing cold out there in the middle of the Superior. Brrrr…

Brenda said she captured the third freighter headed downbound in the early morning sunrise. She mentioned that it was a very cold morning and the fog was rolling in off the Lake. Again, this scene is more enticing for someone wanting to sail the Great Lakes, until you learn that it was 0° that morning and probably colder than that out on Lake Superior. Kudos to the sailors out on the Big Lake during such a rugged season.

Going back to MTU after break, I see a lot of
the iron boats along US-41 especially around
Marquette and the roundabout. Can't wait to get
back to the Copper Country.

order arrived..i was going thru the packing
material..and the mining gazette obits i see the
passing of eddyfitz.. he will be missed here on
pasty central ..my utmost condolances to the
family ..r.i.p. eddy.!!!!
