Make Beautiful Lampwork Glass Beads with Joan Heuvelhorst

Spend a day melting colorful Italian glass rods into one of a kind glass beads. You will learn
techniques to control the flow of hot glass and create multiple beads in different shapes, colors
and designs. This is a beginning class but information will be shared according to student’s
skills, needs and interests. Information about how to safely set up and use a studio of your own will be shared. Please bring: Something to drink, a lunch/snack, and safety glasses.

Class will be held on May 5 from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. OR May 6 from Noon until 5:00 p.m. Class Fee: $110 which includes the cost of materials. Pre-registration and payment are required.

Textures of the Keweenaw with Jane Van Evera and Ed Gray

In this class each student will create a personal book documenting the history and textures of the Keweenaw using a variety of techniques. Students will also create Artist Trading Cards. Pre-

Learn the history of copper and the first people of the Keweenaw through hands on experience.

Learn the skills of forging, texture, forming, patina, and wrapping.

Salsa Contest at Portage Library

If your taste buds begin to dance at the sight of tortilla chips mounded with fresh, homemade salsa, then you’re in for a treat at the Portage Lake District Library.

The Friends of the Library invite everyone to the third annual Cinco de Mayo Salsa Contest on May 2 from 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. To enter the contest, simply make 8 cups of your favorite salsa and label it mild, medium, or hot. Bring it to the library before
5:00 p.m. on May 2 where it will be placed next to bowls of chips for sampling and voting by the public. There will be door prizes and prizes for winners in each category.

Participants will also enjoy Mexican and Latin music compiled by local radio host Anthony Daniel for the event. Daniel is the host of Yearbook: the 1960s on WMPL.

Advance registration is not required to enter the contest but it would be greatly appreciated. Contestants may register by calling the library at 482-4570. This contest is open to all, and everyone is welcome to sample the salsas and vote for their favorite one.

Beekeeping Workshop

The Main Street Calumet Market will host “Lessons From The Hive”, a free public workshop on beekeeping in the U.P. presented by Melissa Hronkin and John Hersman, on Thursday, May 3, 2012 at 6:00 p.m. at the Village of Calumet Council Chambers located in the Calumet Theatre building at 340 Sixth Street in downtown Calumet, Michigan.

Ms. Hronkin and Mr. Hersman, are owners of Algomah Acres Honey Farm and have bee yards in Ontonagon and Houghton Counties. The workshop will cover beekeeping basics and the challenges and rewards of beekeeping in the UP. They will also explain how they conceive of, develop and produce their imaginative hive based product lines which includes several types of raw and spiced honey, wax based products, soaps, salves, and from their micro-winery traditional mead and cyser. They will bring examples of their products which will be available for purchase after the presentation. Whether you are a novice interested in learning about beekeeping, or you are already a beekeeping enthusiast, you will find this presentation thought provoking and informative.

Looking ahead, we’re starting a new series of presentations by Mike Pflaum, Superintendent of the Keweenaw National Historical Park, “Treasures of the Nation: Our National Parks – An Insider’s View”. His first presentation is scheduled for June 13th, so be sure to mark your
calendar!

Whenever you’re in the neighborhood, how about dropping off books for the

Garlic mustard (Alliaria petiolata) is a non-native, extremely invasive
plant that has just begun to show up in the Copper Country. Locally it is
known to be at six Calumet-Laurium locations and eight other sites in
Houghton County although it has not currently been identified in Keweenaw
or Baraga Counties. Janet Marr’s program at the Calumet Public Library on
Wednesday, May 16th will inform us as to the concerns and problems
associated with this invasion and the importance of early detection of
infestations. Live garlic mustard plants will be displayed to help
participants with plant identification and concrete instruction for
eradication and disposal will be shared. Learn about RRIP-IT-UP: Eradicate Garlic Mustard in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, a new UP-wide garlic mustard eradication program funded by a grant from the National Fish & Wildlife
Foundation, which includes funding from the US Fish & Wildlife Service. Let’s get informed so we can stop this plant in its tracks before it’s firmly established in the Copper Country!

*Naked in the Stream*, written by Vic Foerster and illustrated by local
artist, Joyce Koskenmaki, is a celebration of more than thirty yearly trips
to Isle Royale National Park by Foerster. A gifted storyteller and trained
arborist, Foerster’s narrative brings the natural world of Isle Royale to
life with humor and keen observation; an invitation to those who have not
yet visited IRNP, while ringing true for those who are frequent visitors.
Come and join the conversation between author and artist as they relate
tales of Isle Royale and their experiences in the collaboration of this
book. Don’t be surprised if you leave with a plan to book a trip to Isle
Royale this summer!

Description:

Regular meetings of the Gluten-Free Recipe Exchange are held on the 3rd Monday of each month, September through May, from 6:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. at the Portage Lake District Library. The next meeting will be on March 19, and everyone is invited to participate.

Each month features a different type of food, and March’s meeting will focus on grain-free ideas. Participants are welcome to bring their favorite grain-free dish for sampling and are encouraged to share their recipes. Copies of the recipes will be made at the library. Please list all ingredients used in making foods that are shared at these meetings and identify the brand names of the gluten-free ingredients. Bringing food is not a requirement for attendance.

Participants are also encouraged to bring their former favorite recipes that they want help converting to gluten-free. Help will be available.

The Gluten-Free Recipe Exchange is organized by and for those who are interested in or required to follow a gluten-free diet. Gluten-free eating requires the avoidance of all wheat, rye, barley, and oats. Most people find it challenging at first, but are excited to
find recipes and foods that are fun and easy to make and tasty to eat. The Gluten-Free Recipe Exchange is an opportunity to share those great recipes and learn from others.

Everyone who is interested in learning more about gluten-free eating is encouraged to attend.

The History: Early Stanton Township

Today, Stanton Township may be more commonly associated with quiet country
roads, dense forests, and scenic vistas than it is with industrial activity. One hundred years ago, however, it was busy with logging, fishing, farming, and stamp milling. Revisit historic Stanton Township with Barb Koski as she shares its role in copper production and other commercial endeavors.

Barb Koski’s connection to the Keweenaw began in 1958 with summers spent in
Agate Harbor. Researching her husband’s family history of immigrating to Liminga sparked her interest in Copper Country history. Since undertaking that project, she has researched and written extensively about the area’s history. Stanton Township has been a particular focus of her research. Koski has combed archives, talked to long-time residents, and uncovered the history of both well-known features, like the Redridge Dam, and less obvious ones, like Edgemere, and shares them with a wide audience on the Stanton Township website. She will share what she has learned in this illustrated presentation. Come and enjoy this journey through the rich
industrial activities that characterized the area years ago.

This program is part of the popular monthly Fourth Thursday in History series, now in its eleventh year, offered by Keweenaw National Historical
Park, which is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year.

The presentation will take place at 7:00 pm on Thursday, May 24 in the
Stanton Township Hall, located at 14010 Liminga Road, off Houghton’s Canal Road. The event is free and open to the public.

The Fourth Thursday in History series arranges public presentations on important aspects of Copper Country and regional history, including techniques for historic preservation. Presentations are scheduled in venues
throughout the Keweenaw Peninsula, particularly at historic sites
associated with specific topics. They are free and open to the public. Additional support for this event is being provided by Stanton Township.

The community is invited to an Open House at the Portage Lake District Library on Friday, May 25, beginning at 5:00 p.m. It’s an opportunity to enjoy a relaxing evening in the library as well as learn about the library’s downloadable audio books and eBooks.

Step-by-step lessons will be given by library staff on how to download books onto a PC or Mac computer as well as how to download books to a Kindle, iPod, Nook, Sony Reader and other compatible devices. People will discover that this is easy to do, there
are no late fees, and it is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Refreshments will be catered by Illa Garver and Jeannine Blough, and everyone is welcome.
