Bucko is Back

Winter 2001/2002

On Sunday, February 24, 2002, I was feeding the deer at about 5:45 pm. The deer were slow coming in, but I could see a number of them over among the trees. First about three moved in, but to my amazement, there was one with a large rack of antlers. As he got closer I recognized him and I knew it was Bucko by his coloring.

He came within 15 feet and looked right at me. He was back and he was ready for the bread that I was throwing around. He was even more majestic than last year. There were nine other deer with him, all without antlers. But he was surely in charge and not a bit skittish.

Barb was at the kitchen window and took a number of pictures during the 15 minutes that he remained. This is surely a miracle of some sort. Bucko had made it through deer season ... which tells me he lives most of the year back in the deep woods.

Another miracle is that he still has his antlers. Last year he dropped them on January 11th just out from the kitchen window, and we were amazed at the late timing then too, as they usually lose them around the middle of December.

I'm sure he'll be back for regular daily feedings, but will he leave his antlers as he did last year? Time will tell. Truly amazing things happen here in the northwoods with our wild friends.

All the deer are in top condition with the mild winter we've had so far. Stay tuned to see if Bucko drops his antlers again as he did last year.

There has been an UPDATE on Bucko. A neighbor told us they found one antler in their yard, and saw him wearing only one antler on March 1, 2002. We saw him on March 3 with no antlers. No one has been able to find the other antler. Oh well. We still love him! Keep scrolling to the end of the photos and you'll see Bucko without his antlers.

Isn't he magnificent?

Now his antlers are gone!

This story took place at our home here in White City on the Keweenaw Peninsula during the winter of 2001/2002. I took all photographs with our new Sony digital camera.
