Mine Shafts - Meier Collection
Ahmeek 3&4
Allouez-Douglas Shaft
Here are 3 photos of a couple of C&H WWII-era mines, the Allouez-Douglas and the Iroquois. Both were opened during the war with incentives to mine copper. Both were operated into the 1960's. The Allouez-Douglas was unique in that it worked two lodes - an amygdaloid and a conglomerate. It was also owned by Copper Range; C&H paid them a royalty to mine it. The shaft houses look older than they were since wood was used in their construction due to the wartime restrictions on steel. The Allouez-Douglas was northwest of New Allouez back toward the Ahmeek school. The Iroquois was located northeast of Mohawk off the "Old" road (south of Cliff Drive; my Grandparents called it the Old Road or the Military Road. It was also east of Seneca Lake.) C&H used part of the Keweenaw Central right-of-way to reach it. It was a minor lode with sporadic mineralization.

A colorized photo of the Red Jacket shaft taken in the '20's, photographer unknown. We bought it from a bar in Calumet in the early 60's.
