Directed by Klaus Härö, the film "Elina" (also referred to as "Invisible Elina") is this year's Club Finndigo selection.
Elina is a nine-year-old girl who lives with her mother and sister in northern Sweden. They belong to a minority that speaks Finnish. The film follows their daily lives, including Elinas return to school after a bout of tuberculosis that killed her father several years before. In school Elina speaks Finnish. This upsets her new teacher, Miss Holm. Both of them are relentlessly stubborn and a battle of nerves begins. The film was the Finnish candidate for an Oscar in 2003, and won more than 30 other awards, both in Finland and abroad. .
The movie is the 7th "Club Findigo" as part of the Heikinpäivä celebration. It will be shown at the Calumet Theatre on Friday the 18th at 7:15pm, preceded by an authentic Finnish buffet by Eric of Toni's Restaurant in Laurium. The buffet will take place in the theatre's ballroom at 6 p.m. Cost for both buffet and movie, $13; movie alone, $5. Children, half price.
