Finally found the old Kodak Pasty Cam while the snow was still falling Sunday. That's our dog Casey, who has appeared before on these pages, hustling back inside out of the wet snow. Notice how Edie's flowers are still in full bloom.

I'm not sure where Lyn took the upper photo, but it's a good sample of how Lake Superior looked just before the snowy shower. By the time we drove past the Calumet golf course just after sundown last night, the greens were a solid blanket of white.

glo-ri-ous - (glor'-e-es)adj. A fall day in the Keweenaw at peak color with temperatures in the seventies.

Just got home last night from a four-day weekend at our cottage on the east side of Keweenaw Bay in Aura, north of L'anse. We spent Friday in the Keweenaw. Went to the Jampot, almost blew off Brockway Mountain, went to Lac La Belle and Bete Gris Bay. Drove to the top of the hill in Bumbletown for a beautiful 360 view of the Keweenaw. Does that hill have a name? My brother-in-law led their fight to secede from the union when their water bill increased. He had Walter Cronkite in his living room. That must've been in the seventies. Saturday we drove around towards Covington and ended up in Tapiola for dinner. The colors were beautiful just about everywhere and we were fortunate to hit peak weekend. It was snowing hard as we crossed the Mackinac Bridge late Sunday afternoon and the snow continued quite a ways south of there. It was too quiet in bed last night after hearing Superior's thunder all weekend at the cottage.

Marsha,
It is Bumbletown Hill.

I took this photo of Superior yesterday in Big Bay just before it started to snow.

Charlie, where'd you get that dog? He looks a lot like my dog Buster, who was found, literally, in a gutter in Chicago. Now he wants to be a yooper pup, and maybe some day he will be! That would be a true rags-to-riches story. Thanks so much for all the wonderful photos (and stories!) you share.

For anyone who's interested - quite some time ago on Past-Email someone inquired about the movie "Escanaba in Da Monlight". It will be out on DVD and VHS tomorrow.

By lisa, mi on Monday, October 14, 2002 - 05:29 pm:

that is a small barking cat!! ha ha ha.. i have a black great dane, 150 lbs 34 inch leg, now that is a dog.. i love big dogs.

By Animal lover on Monday, October 14, 2002 - 05:42 pm:

To each his own, Lisa. I myself and many others prefer 'barking cats' as a pet over a BIG dog.

By Liz Benson Idaho on Monday, October 14, 2002 - 05:50 pm:

While the Keweenaw rec'd snow, I was in Yellowstone National Park for the closing weekend.
Nippy but Big Blue sky, some powder snow in the trees and the animals right in front of our noses.
Color was over 2 weeks ago. Fly Fishers going after the wiley browns on the Madison and Fireholes...another season over...That big cup of ice cream helped the lament on the drive back to Pocatello reality.

By js on Monday, October 14, 2002 - 06:02 pm:

Marsha: I agree with you, there is nothing like falling asleep to the sound of Lake Superior pounding the shoreline. I had the same experience over the weekend, the last weekend at the camp for this season. Lake Superior is the best sleeping pill known to mankind.

Pat~I had given up visiting the video store and asking about "Escanaba" and, thus, didn't see their "Coming Soon" list. Appreciate the info. Thanks!

Im shure I said, it will be an early winter this year in one of my messages in the past, i lived in calumet from 1960 to 1972, some of the best winters ever with tons of snow, as a kid i remember, The first snow of each year back then it was the greatest moment on earth because it ment playing hocky in the street, oak street and other areas, we were young and full of energy, never got cold. Now im 42 and the thrill has gone, oh to be young again and back home where i belong. Back home someday, a new home and a new begining on life, fresh start like spring.

Lyn, your photo is a perfect example of good
composition, as well as a really dramatic subject. The
diagonal lines of the squall lead the eye right to the
bright parts of the sky, and the vertical line of the
reflection in the water does the same. Excellent!

By bluznurse, CA on Monday, October 14, 2002 - 09:30 pm:

Liz, I was in Yellowstone 2 weeks before you
at peak color and it was amazing, but not as
colorful as the U.P. The wildlife was
incredible, however. You can see some of my
photos if you're interested on
www.pbase.com/bluznurse. (Thanks to the
Zman for turning me on to that site for photo
exhibition.)

Receiving a compliment from a great photographer such as yourself has left me speechless.

I made it and it is wonderful! Got here on Thursday of last week. Have seen the best of the best. Drove up Bumbletown Hill this morning and it was perfect! Heading to the Harbor tomorrow and back to CA on Wed. Missed you again Charlie-maybe next year. Left you a note at Stillwaters.

Love that dog Charlie. A friend of mine has one that looks a lot like Casey. She rescued her from the animal shelter, named her Maggie, And she has become a faithful companion, bursting with personality. Maggie comes to work with her every morning, geets us all with a wagging tail & a happy good morning bark. Spends the day with us, shares or lunch and at 5 oclock gives a bark to let us know it's time to get ready to go home. Quite a girl & a lucky one too. Casey looks like he's on a mission. Report this snow to someone.

Has anyone had any problems acsessing their e-mails with hotmail.com today? I had problems with mine all day. I still cant check my e-mail. My daughter had problems at school today. I also had a temporary problem getting on the net. I wonder if it was a problem with my provider. Guess I'd better go with pasty.com soon.

Bluznurse,
We don't have the hardwoods in Yellowstone and our neck of Idaho. Best we can do is the scrub oak and maples tucked into the crevasses of the
lower mountains. Otherwise it is the bright yellow aspens mixed into the lodgepole pines. I'll go on the grand snoop for your pics. Thanks.

I MISS CASEY!!! :) And of course, mom and dad..I miss you, too. :) (by the way..just to let you know, I think of you all alot more often than I write) :) It is nice to see snow, but I am glad I don't have any. (yet anyway) :) I love looking at all the pics of home. I guess I will always be a yooper no matter how far away I am, huh? :) I don't know if you heard or not but Carl and I are expecting another baby December 9th. Ultrasound shows a girl so we shall see. :) Will keep you posted. By the way...do you have an e-mail address that I can send e-mails and pics to? Take care and hope to hear from you soon!

By Charlie and Edie at Pasty Central on Tuesday, October 15, 2002 - 11:30 pm:

Congratulations Vania... a sister for James! Reminded us of when the Pasty Cam caught the two of you, along with Aunt Jodie, in the Perkins parking lot. As we recall, there was a little more snow on the ground that day.
