Who were the bricklayers (or rock layers) who
built this structure? Amazing archwork.

I do believe this is right outside of Christmas.

The names of possible masons are listed at the site. The info on the occpation was taken from the census records.
The site is located across the road (m-28) from the casino in Christmas. The area is called Bay Furnace and has a camp ground and picnic area.

We last camped at these campgrounds just before the Finn Fest in 1996 on our way to Northern Michigan in Marquette. Was really something to see.

Came back from this area last Sunday after spending six days in Christmas. Rode through Bay Furnace Picnic and campgrounds everyday. The view is fantastic and the campgrounds are well maintained. Of course a nightly ride to the rest area across from Scott Falls was also a must, rain or shine. You sure don't get anything like that down here in troll land.

While in the area, we ate at the Navigator Resturant in Munising. It reopened this past July with new owners. The food is good, the atmosphere is pleasant with a nautical theme and the view of the Pictured Rocks boat dock and Grand Island can't be beat.

Jan Gustafson, former owner of the Gay Bar.

The above was mentioned in a message yesterday. When did she own the bar, and is she still around? I am wondering if this is the lady who had the dog named Ace at the bar.

I have SEEN that sign in Christmas! (35 years ago!) Here, in Georgia, we have Santa Claus, Georgia. Everytime it's mentioned, I think about Christmas Michigan right away!

Reminds me of the furnace at Fayette. Has anyone seen that one? Fayette really is a nice place to visit. The buildings are restored very beautimously. Nice, too. :o)

Ken I remember seeing Fayette about 45 years ago before anything was even done there

By Mike from Brighton on Tuesday, October 15, 2002 - 11:31 am:

Ya Ken, took the family there this summer on our mini tour of the UP. It was great!! We spent about 3 hours looking around Fayette. They sure seemed to have done a great job restoring that piece of UP history. I really thought it was cool that you can still see some of the drilling bits that broke off in the mining cliffs. Kids got a kick out of the hotel having had the first 2 story outhouse. Good stuff
