Hi, This is a long shot, but could those of you who had/have relatives or friends that lived in Allouez in the 1930's ask if any of them remember Mikka Kentta or Michael Kentta. He died in the early 1930's.Still trying to track down any of the family. He is buried in the Ahmeek Cemetery. Alicia

i took my yooper scooper out here in northern idaho, and while i was using it (they get a whole 50in. of snow a year out here) some lady came up to me and told me what a unique "child's sled" i had. if they only knew...

Having grown up in Copper Harbor, and being blessed with a father who was one of those guys who could "do anything", I have a home-made snow scoop that I use where I live now in Northern Indiana. You should have seen the neighbor's stare when I first got it out and started using it! "What IS that?" they wanted to know. I told them that everyone had one of these where I came from. I started to try to tell them about a "snow walk" that people put up from their front doors to the sidewalk in the winter, but that was too much for their imaginations. I'm not sure if they couldn't imagine the snow walk or whether they couldn't imagine that much snow!

I am having one heckuva time finding a "Yooper Scooper" here in Thailand! hope we don't get any snow soon! holy wuh...its already almost November too. hehe...
This site sure is great for us yoopers so violently uprooted and cast to dark and mysterious corners of the world. There is no Old Mil' here and no pasties either. It's a hard life.
Sure do miss the UP, especially in the fall. This is a great way to keep in touch with reality even if it is virtual reality. Keep up the great work guys and gals and keep the photos coming. They are appreciated more than you know.
I have stories...

Katy--thanks for returning to say Hi! Figured it was due to HABDS (Having A Bad Day Syndrome!) so no one got too ruffled.
There are some that would say there's no such thing as a bad pasty, but I've HAD bad and would disagree. ;-)
I've tried them from several places and wasn't too impressed, but will be placing an order from Pasty Central based on all the glowing comments I've read here, just to see what a "real" pasty tastes like--can't wait!
Thanks Charlie! I will! I "tune in" at least every other day or so and alot of times more often then that!! Best wishes, Renee in IL

Just was wondering if anyone happens to know any history about Runkle Lake in the Crystal Falls area? My maiden name was Runkle so I am curious about the background info on the lake. Best wishes, Renee in IL
Stay tuned...maybe somebody out there has a lead for you.

Hi Past-E Cam - Am a new reader of your site. enjoy most of the mail - especially those that have a long history in the area, ancestors wereFinland and Norway. My grandfathers' names were Tikkanen and Seppala. I spent childhood and teenage summers in Beacon Hill and Redridge, Liminga. I love the U.P. - Copper Country. I walked on the stamp sand, picked blueberries in the 40's, knew many people along the Liminga road and in Beacon Hill. Even met Billy Brinkman once - I could go on and on. Some of my relatives were: Marrtila, Koivu, Haivila and Ylitalo. Friends were: Sten, Mylloija (?) Nissen, Posey, Morin, Marinelli - probably more - but they don't come to mind at the moment. My brother ordered pasties from Pasty Central, he lives in Seattle, Washington - his family loved them. Would love an acknowledgment of my e-mail and would not mind hearing from descendants from the above mentioned areas. Live in Ferndale, Mich. now.

Hello,
It was good to see your website, since pasties were a family staple with us.
I would appreciate contact with anyone who might know of my TUCKER or SELLER ancestors, most of whom were born in Calumet. The family began in Calumet with Christopher Tucker, and his wife, Mary Cecilia Seller. Their children were:
Zaida, b. 1888 Iva, b. 1889 Joseph, b. 1891 Effie Ruth, b. 1893 Christopher, b. 1894 Ruth Cecilia, b. 1897 Merle Seller, b. 1898 Winston Harris, b. 1901 Euncice, b. 1906 Alvin Henry, b. 1908 June, b. unknown
Hi Charlie, Thanks for the response: I stand corrected. A hugh thanks to your staff and all the residents at STILL WATERS. Jan Medved

Hey Kati from Wisconsin, lighten up,,,,this is a great site, Keep watching, you will learn a lot about the UP
Charlie, we just returned from Calumet last nite. The colors are still great, maybe not as vivid, but Mother Nature still knows how to put on a show. The ride to the harbor was wonderful, and the weather was perfect for that time of the year in the UP. Had a great time visiting old friends and of course family.
Thank you for this site Charlie. Jan Medved
<Charlie>: Thanks, Jan, for the compliments... but I can't take all the credit for Pasty Central. It's a team effort by the staff and residents of Still Waters Assisted Living Community. Daryl Laitila monitors all our discussion pages and does web design work, photography, etc. Jonathan Hopper maintains the servers which keep us connected, as well as the growing PastyNET dial-in membership in the Keweenaw. Mike Patterson manages the pasty kitchen and the packaging department, along with Lori White and John Bramble, Still Waters' personnel director. Becky Howard processes the steady flow of pasty orders, Fedex, accounting, and responding to email. Along with several part timers and about 18 Still Waters residents (who help with peeling veggies each month), we all carry on this labor of love, to bring you a 'glimpse of life in the U.P.'

Hi - My wife and I were in Laurium/Calumet area last month visiting her sister. We wanted to try your pasties, but were told you make them in an old warehouse now but we did walk by your home. We had to settle for pasties from Toni's (sp?) in Laurium. We are back in New Mexico and will order some from you guys -- maybe around Christams. Sorry we didn't get to see you in person. My wife is from Sault Ste Marie and I was from Escanaba.
