I was at the MN State Fair last night and also enjoyed a pasty. Mmm! However, I'm still amazed at the number of amateurs out there who insist on having gravy on their pasty instead of ketchup!

I would like to thank everyone that has stopped by our booth at the Minnesota State Fair and enjoyed a little tast of home. The response has been outstanding.

Greetings Pasty Lovers!

We just returned from Hancock on vacation and enjoyed pasties at the Kaleva Cafe on Quincy Street. Then we made sure we also bought the Finnish nisu, Trenary Toast and several rings of Vollwerth's sausage.

It was good to see my relatives again...Gus and Lorna Linja in Lake Linden, Betty and Lawrence Julio of Ripley, and all the others. Also we enjoyed a worship service at The Salvation Army chapel in Hancock where Lieutenants Quentin and Mary Boyle are doing a great ministry.

We have about six pasties frozen in the freezer for later. Ummmm! God bless.

Recieved 6 pasties as 40 anniversary gift from inlaws. They arrive still cold. We really looked forward to dinner since we hadn't had a pasty with rutabagas since our last visit to the copper country in about 1994. You can buy good pasties in Butte MT but no rutabagas.

You can request extra rutabaga, or no carrot, when you order from Pasty Central. Just specify in the "Special Instructions" of the order form.

This is the most awesome website. I discovered it a few months ago, then promptly forgot about it, as I didn't have much access to our computer at that time. (husband and two teenagers who live on the computer!) Now that we have more than one in the house and I've found your site again, I can hardly wait to visit often. The only problem is...it makes me so homesick for the U.P.!!! Also, a great place to visit family - Hi, Aunt Ellen! I see you write quite often. I saw your e-mail mentioning the picture of July 31 with a note in memory of my mom and grandma. That was so neat. I miss them, too! Thanks to the editor for such a wonderful site for us misplaced yoopers! By the way, what or where or who is the picture from July 1st? The gal sitting down looks like my friend Jean from Calumet. Just curious!

Hi, I remember an Alice Stopel when I went to Hancock High.........I graduated in 1960....did you marry John Zimmerman by any chance? My brother, Tom Line, who graduated in 1961, lives in the Milwaukee area now.....do you remember him, Alice? When did you graduate from HCH? My yearbooks were all lost in one of my many moves over the years. I wish I could get reprints of them. :(

I worked in the kitchen at Still Waters in the early 80's while I was in high school. So often these days our elders have to move into homes where they just quietly live out their last years. To imagine the pride and accomplishment the residents at Still Waters must have! They are living productive lives. They are working to take care of the home, and get to directly see the results when new things are able to be done.

I haven't been able to make it "home" for 3 years now. Miss the u.p and my family (the Hermansons in Laurium) terribly. Pasty Central has been my lifeline these days!

Thank you for feeding our souls as well as our bellies! You all have touched so many hearts and brought those fond memories to so many of us, all across this nation. All from a little "old folks" home tucked away in a little town in the Keweenaw Peninsula!

Is the Pasty Counter broken? Seems to be stuck on 52,026 for the last few days.

That's where the count stood when we suspended taking Internet orders to supply all the pasties for the Minnesota State Fair. The counter will take a big leap when we add all of those, and resume the Internet orders on Monday.

To Alice in Milwaukee, some one asked if the last name is Lahti. Is Lahti a Maried name or a maiden name? The Lahti I know are from Rabbit Bay.

Re Lisa and the Cornish pasties. My husband and I traveled to Europe some years ago and found that the pizza in Italy didn't hold a crust to that in the U.S.A. Also the lefse in Norway (in case any of you know what lefse is) didn't hold a candle to that made by my Mom at Christmas time). I guess it's all is what you are used to.

My Mother, 2 sisters, and I just met for a week in Copper Harbor, after a 6 year absence. It's just as beautiful as ever, and was a wonderful place for a family reunion. We picked blueberries, enough thimbleberries for one jar of jam, went to Horseshoe Harbor where we had a hotdog roast on the beach, drove the road to where Gratiot River empties into the lake and hunted for Thomsonite, visited the Eagle Harbor Art fair, canoed in the harbor, visited with long time friends who live there in the summer, ate fabulous icecream cones, and ate our fill of pastys. The weather was nearly perfect for our entire stay, and it was a memorable week. What a beautiful place it is!!

Hello all! Last night (Friday) we got treated with a pretty intense display of the aurora. Unusual to see it this far South but it does happen on occasion. It was a double treat also as it was the peak of the annual meteor showers too! Never have seen an aurora pulse like this one tho; almost looked like a strobe. Almost no color to the aurora either but that may have been due to the very high light pollution in this area. Anyone up North have a similar sighting?

Yes! We had a terrific wall of light about 3:30 am that almost seemed artificial, like somebody's big spotlights from across the Lake over in Thunder Bay. Afraid the light levels proved to be too much of a challenge for the Pasty Cam

I've had Grandma's pasties at the MN State Fair for the last two years. Mmm!

Grandma's Pasty Shop is proud to be a part of the Pasty Central Family. Sandy and Chuck Hoyer, the owners, are former Yoopers from Houghton and Hancock.

Visit us at the Minnesota State Fair August 24-September 4. We are located on the corner of Underwood and Dan Patch next to the Penny Arcade and across from the Visitor's Center.

We will be serving three different pasties -- beef, chicken and all veggie. Last year we developed a dessert pasty which is to die for. Curious? Check it out. Grandma's Pasty Shop will even have frozen pasties to take home.

Before this, we will be at Steele County Fair in Owatonna, Minnesota from August 15 to August 20 in front of the Four Seasons Building.

Great to see the pictures from Sunday from the Eagle Harbor lighthouse open house. I am an amateur radio operater and this past weekend on the radio was lighthouse/lightship weekend where ham radio operators set up operation from lighthouses across the US to help bring recognization to them. Too bad there wasn't one at the Eagle Harbor lighthouse. Would have been great talking to someone on ham radio at that location as I have actually been to that lighthouse. Well, maybe next time.....By the way, are any of you reading this UP amatuer radio operators? Just curious.....

We had a Pasty Party over the weekend (about 20 of us), and all gave rave reviews about the pasties - tasted just like my mom makes. (She enjoyed them, too)

Happy August. I have heard that it is raining cats and dogs in the lower peninsula. How has it been in the U.P. I remember many a rainy August. I guess that's why I rather like a rainy day. We used to play cards and do other things together. When it was sunny and beautiful we all went our way, playing with our friends, walking in the woods, etc. But when it was rainy it was sort of family time. Playing card or games with the sibs. Great times.
