They say you never know what you've got till it's gone. I've been living in Austin, Texas for almost fourteen years now, (and below the bridge for a few years before that, and hadn't been back home to the UP for quite some time. When I got off the plane in Houghton and drove to my parents in Chassell, I was struck by the sheer beauty of the Copper Country and also by the realization of how much I had missed it. When I graduated from Baraga High in '79 I headed south as soon as possible. While I don't miss the winters or the blackflies, I do miss the cool summer nights and the solitude available right outside your back door.

You're Pasatycam brings back many memories for me. Thank you.

HAPPY MEMORIAL DAY: STILL WATERS

Just a few thoughts remembering the past MEMORIAL DAYS, when I was a kid growing up in Swedetown. Every Memorial Day, along with my grandmother and mom, we would walk through the woods back of Swedetown to the cemetary. There we would see the flags placed on the graves of those who had served in the armed services form the area. It was quite an impressive sight for a little kid.During the second world war, one young man from Swedetown was killed, that is one to many for a community of that size. Now that so many years have passed, I don't see the that happening. At that time it seemed that the whole area turned out for that occasion. It is a time of honoring those who served in the armed forces of every war that was fought.Also, a time to honor the familys that kept the home fires burning so to speak, for they to fought the wars. Now, people take the day, and make it into one long weekend of fun. What has to be remembered is that HISTORY FORGOTTEN WILL REPEAT ITSELF, GOD willing that will never happen again, but the young have to study and learn from their history. Well, enough of that, again I wish you a HAPPY MEMORIAL DAY.

Thanks again for the beautiful pictures of all the things familiar to me from my childhood and so many things and places I've never seen. I have a lot of favorites, but my most rescent is of the barn reflecting in the water. It is breathtaking. See you this summer!

Tuesday's shot was pretty close to home (5/23) - just around the corner from it, to be exact. The firehall pictured is at the end of Rockhouse Road (one time Barn Street), 1/2 block from where my folks lived until last fall. I spent a lot of time haunting around the old mine buildings. My grandpa who used to work for the railroad (not in the U.P.) explained all about the round house and how the track turned around before it was removed by one of the businesses operating in the old roundhouse. You're making me homesick! Keep up the wonderful work.

I'm glad to see that dogs are welcome visitors, my collies, Rosie and Tess, who are senior citizens themselves, (but don't tell them that) have been visitors at senior homes many times, even when we were out at the collie nat'l last year in Massachusetts, we popped in on a local facility and the dogs love it. Next time we're up your way, we'll stop in for a visit. You don't even have to give them cookies, they just love the attention.

Hey, Sara T from Phoenix, the blackflies are temporary. We don't have to stay in all summer to avoid cooking to death. Maybe you'd better come home. (OK, so maybe we have to dig ourselves out the rest of the year, but it's a fair trade. You don't get seasons.)

Whose barn was that featured in last week's pasty-cam shots?

One has to enjoy this environmentally-friendly site--pasties made with REAL ingredients, and a web site made from "Recycled Internet!" I expect everyone who's into the Green movement to visit and order pasties (Al Gore, put your money where your mouth is!).

Stopping by to check on the progress of the lift bridge. We plan to visit the area in late June and most of July. We tow a travel trailer so we wonder what stage the repairs will be in at that time. Any information will be greatly appreciated. Love this site. Keep up the good work.

You'll be glad to know that they plan to stop working on the bridge the first week in June and then start again in September. All four lanes of the bridge should be open for the summer. Come on up! Be sure to wave at the Bridge Cam on your way through!

The May 17th picture of the Red barn at sunset is one the best that I have seen in a long time. I have it as my wallpaper on my computer at home and work.

A blown up version of the actual picture would make a great fundraising item.

Was the May 17th photo that Daryl Laitila posted on the Pasty Cam from the Keewenaw Waterway Resort (out by Schmidt's Corner). I used to live out there when I went to school at tech, and the barn and pond look suspiciously like one that Bruce Barna owns out at the resort.

Just returned from another glorious 3 day weekend in God's country with stops in Ontonagon,Negaunee and Big Bay...A great time as usual and the best part was the snow flurries Sunday morning at my friend's cabin near the dead river basin north of Negaunee...Can hardly wait until memorial day for a return trip to the Ontonagon area...along with the rest of the tourists...lol...this is still the best website on the net...keep up the great work....

What an awesome site to happen across. The pictures are great. Even when you are fortunate enough to live in this wonderful area the pictures are still greatly appreciated. Compliments to all the photographers.

there is nothing you can do about the black flies except to spray yourself or stay indoors.thats one of the good things about living in mich.the winters are getting better.

OK ....so, how bad are the black flies in the UP? I have only been there after they are gone. Are they all over in the towns and such? Or are they only out in the woods and countryside? Just wondering how to best deal with them when we do move up there. More concerned about dealing with them then dealing with the UP winters. :-)

Great photo of the synagogue in Hancock! Must have been a few of the Jewish faith in the area--a synagogue can only form if there are ten or more families. Can you get some closer shots in the future? Generally there is Hebrew script and I'd like to practice my Hebrew skills.

Less then two months and I'll be living in Yooper land! I can't wait to come back to MI!!! I can just hear the snow, ice, and the waves of Lake Superior calling out my name! I am SO pumped!

Hi It has been a pleasure all this winter to be able to go to pasty cam and see all the pictures of the U.P.We will be leaving next week to go back north for the summer. We stay until after the womens retreat at Gitchee Gummee and then we head back down. your site makes everything so close that it takes away the homesickness. As long as i can see the picture I can enjoy my self in the sun. Thanks Again for the Good work.

One of the events I most like to see is the Northern Lights; an aurora. I have seen a few in my lifetime but look forward to someday moving up to the UP and hopefully getting to see them more often. Yes, we know the winters up there can be very long and rough but it would be worth it! After all, I have survived tons of Chicago winters. I know, not as long and hard as the ones up there but we are talking Chicago here.......ick, sorry, but I am not a city person at all!! :-)What I am more concerned with is how the black flies are up there in the summer? I hear some areas it's pretty bad. Is it like that all over? Or just more near the woods and such?

To Renee in Illinois - Good for you and your husband, being so impressed with Da U.P.! I married a Yooper who moved to Missouri 30 years ago. He expects to retire this summer, and we are moving to the UP then, too.
A magazine that you might enjoy - although it is not just about the U.P. - is Lake Superior Magazine. We've subscribed for several years and also buy his folks a subscription for Christmas.
