Please pass this to Martha, Dorothy, Sylvia and the others:

Your pasties were delicious...every bit as good as my Mom use to make! They were golden brown, filled with meat and I probably could have passed them of as "home made"...but, I didn't. Well done, folks.

They were shipped on Tuesday and arrived in Brunswick, Maine at 9:30 am on Wednesday; they were still frozen. The packing was so good that not a single crumb had fallen off.
Dorothy
Thanks, Keith. You made our day!

I've been a loyal fan of Pasty Central after being a born and raised Yooper, and then leaving for the south, currently residing in Tucson, AZ. Fortunately, my parents, Ellen (Ekdahl) and Alvin Covell spend their winters down here so I can get a pasty fix when they arrive. It's great fun to check your website, read other emails and save various pictures as wallpaper on my PC at work.

Had to mention the "Bolens Hus-Ski" picture from February 22nd - I laughed out loud when I saw it! My dad bought one in the 60's and I have MANY fond memories of "quality" time with our family bombing through the woods and trails of the U.P. on that thing. I thought dad was so unhip when he brought it home! My brother (Kevin Covell) lives near Cleveland, Ohio, and also saw the picture that day, so emails were flying back and forth notifying each other of the picture. We all had a great time remembering those trips.

NEVER thought I'd see one of those things again - thank you so much for bringing back some wonderful family memories.

Heard you don't put turnip in your pasties. What sacrilege!!!! 'Proper' Cornish pasties, as God truly meant them, have always contained this vital ingrediant. Maybe you should try it. Maybe we should compare recipes, over here (Cornwall) is still the only place in the world to eat a pasty, down by the harbour, surrounded by nets and crab pots, and the smell of that beautiful fresh Cornish sea air in your nostrils. Hmmm, makes me hungry, time for a pasty....

You heard wrong, Dal. We DO use rutabaga in our regular pasties (turnip). Folks may request them without rutabaga, but the vast majority leave them in. This week we just surpassed 37,000 of these shipped throughout the US, sorry we can't send you some to try for yourself :o)

By Darren Lean, Truro, Cornwall on Tuesday, March 28, 2000 - 09:44 pm:

What a wonderful enterprise. I am Cornish born and bred, and therefore was practically teethed on pasties. It is great to see our ( in Cornwall) national delicacy so avidly appreciated over there. I will make sure to visit your site often. Out of interest, do you offer a traditional line? By this I mean one half sweet and one half savoury. Many miners ate their pasties like that, a complete meal in one, and I have never actually come across this method commercially or otherwise. It would be nice to see this old recipe brought back from the grave..

Very Best Regards

Deth Da

You are right, Darren. A little apple sauce in one end of the pasty would make it taste like having the main course and dessert all together. We highly recommend having a little apple sauce on the side, as there is plenty of delicious crust on our pasties, and the taste combination is heavenly. Your editor gets hungry just thinking about it!

We'll have to work on your pasty teething ring idea :o)

Florida is for wimps! We're coming to the Copper Country on our Spring Break. We'll keep checking the PastyCam update to see if we'll need those snowshoes or not!

You certainly could use the snowshoes this morning, as we have had about a foot dumped on us this week, in certain areas of the Keweenaw

Love da Escanaba sign. You don't have any pictures from that film shootin', "Escanaba in da Moonlight," do you? I think the name shoulda been "Escanaba in da Moonlight, eh." Oh, well.

Also enjoyed the snow-speckled pics. The snow plow with the snow sure looks better than the snow plow pic I took a few summers ago, surrounded by green grass. Maybe you'll want to post that pic as a contrast?

Who are the Calumet citizens rooting for in Indianapolis this weekend--Michigan State's Spartans or Wisconsin's Badgers? Yeah, two weeks ago who'd a thought the Badgers Buckets squad woulda been in da Final Four and the Hockey team not?

Really enjoy the web site. Especially "Pasty Cam."

Is there something you can do to make the "Bridge Cam" a little sharper and color more true? It seems to have deteriorated over the last few months.

Keep up the updating!

By Shirley-Ann H. on Thursday, March 23, 2000 - 10:52 am:

I was so happy to find a sight on pasties as I am a Upper and now live in Wiconsin and I am planning to get together with my sisters and we are going to try some of those recipes. I had family who worked in the lumber camps and that was a big part of their meals. Now I want to bring this to our children and grandchildren. It will be so much fun too share this sight with many others. Will be back to this sight again. A pasty lover. Shirley-Ann H.

Charlie, With all the controversy about Mt Bohemia, I was wondering if the pasty cam has shown any pictures of it. I think you have but I don't know a quick way to check your archives for it. Help would be appreciated. Thanks,

Many moons ago, when I didn't know about St Urho, I was called "Copper Country Irish"///~!*\\...

Arbutus! If It weren't a protected plant, it would be in my little woods at the back of our lot amongst the pines. The scent is wonderful! Someone told me of a wildflower "seed" place - but it was lost in last "malfunction".

Having a great-granddaughter now - made me VERY interested in the new babyfood, "Pasty"! Can't have any more calories than the 1956 cornstarched "bananas" that USED TO BE made. Sounds like a new project for Stillwater to me!

Again, Kiitoksia for the pictures and "letters TO home".///*!*\\

Because of this public posting area, we had a nice visit with Dave and Sandie Harjala over in Rockwood, TN., earlier this month. Sandie made some homemade pasty-pie for the evening meal and they invited us to spend the night with them which we did. Hooray for the pasty.com website!

Hey, Pasty Central,
Arrived home, on St Urho's eve, from a dynamic sunny ski day at Grand Targhee. And, there to my purple eyes appeared that tell tale box from the Copper Country. What better way to top off a sun burned teeth day than have a pasty. Thanks to George Hite for declaring my snow forcast the February winner. And a bigger thanks to Charlie and crew for making the prize special!

Would it be possible to have a picture of the Trailing Arbutus when it is in bloom? Wish we had it in southern Michigan. Only one time have I been in the UP when it was blooming. By the way Happy St.Patrick's Day to all...

Just wanted to wish you all a Happy St. Urho's Day! I hope it is a blessed and enjoyable day!

By Weber/ Palatine IL on Wednesday, March 15, 2000 - 10:02 pm:

Is it possible to have the pasty-cam get a more detailed view of the lift-bridge while it is under repair? We're planning our annual visit to the UP (Bootjack) in late June through July. As we'll be towing a travel trailer we wonder what stage it'll be in by that time. Oh, by the way, your pasties are on the agenda.

Many thanks for the great site you provide.
JoAnne Weber----------Palatine, Illinois

We'll try to have some updates on the bridge between now and tourist season

Ellen Nelson of Colorodo : Next time you have a Kday celebration, let me know! Cpizzitola@ttseagle.com.

I would have traveled anywhere in Colorado to see some folks that actually know what a pasty is! It would have done my heart a lot of good to see those MTU shirts!!! Since I live in Aurora, how far away could this have been?

Please don't keep it a secret next time, Ay!

By Lorimer Eaton Jr., NY on Monday, March 13, 2000 - 01:45 pm:

I was intrigued by your photo of the boat in the Bete Gris canal. The boat is actually the "PIONEER" which was owned and operated by Vivian Nordstrom. I spent many happy days and hours on the "PIONEER" as a child and teenager because my family resides at Bete Gris in the summer and in Calumet in the winter. The "PIONEER" had a full superstructure, is about 42 feet in length and was powered by a single Caterpillar diesel. Vivian was a commercial fisherman out of Bete Gris for many years and one of his crew was Hank Aho of Lac LaBelle. Vivian was also one of the children who survived the Italian Hall Massacre of 1913. He was one of those individuals who, although was only formally educated to the 3rd grade level, was one of the most knowledgeable and intelligent people I have met - because he read constantly during those long winter months waiting for the ice to melt on the bay. Vivian, who died in 1982, retired the "PIONEER" toward the end of the '70's and it has rested in this spot since that time. I am currently residing in New York and look at the Pasty Central web site just to get a feel for home in the Copper Country.

Thank you for reminding me of this wonderful man and his boat.

By Stan Kotajarvi, Lansing on Monday, March 13, 2000 - 08:48 am:

Hi, Charlie!
Greetings to you and all the residents and workers at Stillwaters.

I still marvel at the great work you are all doing. The pastycam photos are a joy to a former Yooper (now a Troll). Since St. Urho's Day is coming soon, I wonder if there are any plans to get some pictures of this event. I'm I correct that St. Urho's day is an invention of some Finns in Minnesota as a reply to the Irish? I'm sure it isn't meant to be adversarial or disrespectful toward good old St. Patrick, but leave it to the peculiar Finnish sense of humor to look at March through a different perspective.
Keep up the good work.

By Mike M; Kalamazoo on Saturday, March 11, 2000 - 07:49 pm:

Your recent picture of the bridge and comment about the cam made me wonder, On which side is the Cam located, Hancock or Houghton??

The Bridge Cam is on the Hancock side, in a big white house with a great view of the scene. Read more about it in last July's Eye of the Pasty Cam

Thanks for all of your work shipping 264 pasties to Denver for our Colorado KDay. We had over 160 MTU alumni and family attend our banquet. It was a terrific success and the pasties were great!

Lee Werk , Florida on Monday, March 6, 2000 - 11:31 pm:

Love this site, most people here in Orlando, have NO idea what a pasty is...... I love to tell them all about them, and then hear them say, "oh sounds good with a little gravy on it". I tell them NOT MY pasties, if you want them the way they are supposed to be made and eaten fine, but no additions or suggestions on the ingredients. Anyways, just wanted you to know how much I enjoy this site. Am anxious for my yearly visit to the U.P. in June, but know that I won't want to come back down here, after being in God's Country for 2 weeks.

We are important people up there. Moved to Las Vegas 14 years ago. Always come back to see family and buy or goodies from there. Pasties and Vollwerths hotdogs. Mary Sullivan

Just heard last night, when talking to your folks (belated birthday call), about your web site. We think it's GREAT! We'll be sure to check in regularly.

Love, Uncle Jim and Aunt Bev

Thanks for the note! Did you know Edie has appeared on the Pasty Cam? Here she is at the Keweenaw Mountain Lodge with Jonathan ...who has taken about 20,000 pictures of the U.P. for our daily features.

Loved seeing Haven Falls. It's right across the street from Red Sands, where my family has stayed many, many summers. I can hear the water falling & smell the fresh pike cooking on the grill...

Happy 2nd Birthday, Pasty Cam! I've enjoyed every picture you've ever posted. That 54 degrees on the bank sign made me eager to get up to Calumet. Heck, I could be getting that oil tank painted along the "bad" side of my house, a mining-company duplex. It's always a mild winter in Cincinnati. Enjoy the warmth! I'm looking forward to some dramatic thawing photos!
