I've been a loyal fan of Pasty Central after being a born and raised Yooper, and then leaving for the south, currently residing in Tucson, AZ. Fortunately, my parents, Ellen (Ekdahl) and Alvin Covell spend their winters down here so I can get a pasty fix when they arrive. It's great fun to check your website, read other emails and save various pictures as wallpaper on my PC at work.

Had to mention the "Bolens Hus-Ski" picture from February 22nd - I laughed out loud when I saw it! My dad bought one in the 60's and I have MANY fond memories of "quality" time with our family bombing through the woods and trails of the U.P. on that thing. I thought dad was so unhip when he brought it home! My brother (Kevin Covell) lives near Cleveland, Ohio, and also saw the picture that day, so emails were flying back and forth notifying each other of the picture. We all had a great time remembering those trips.

NEVER thought I'd see one of those things again - thank you so much for bringing back some wonderful family memories.

Heard you don't put turnip in your pasties. What sacrilege!!!! 'Proper' Cornish pasties, as God truly meant them, have always contained this vital ingrediant. Maybe you should try it. Maybe we should compare recipes, over here (Cornwall) is still the only place in the world to eat a pasty, down by the harbour, surrounded by nets and crab pots, and the smell of that beautiful fresh Cornish sea air in your nostrils. Hmmm, makes me hungry, time for a pasty....

You heard wrong, Dal. We DO use rutabaga in our regular pasties (turnip). Folks may request them without rutabaga, but the vast majority leave them in. This week we just surpassed 37,000 of these shipped throughout the US, sorry we can't send you some to try for yourself :o)

What a wonderful enterprise. I am Cornish born and bred, and therefore was practically teethed on pasties. It is great to see our ( in Cornwall) national delicacy so avidly appreciated over there. I will make sure to visit your site often. Out of interest, do you offer a traditional line? By this I mean one half sweet and one half savoury. Many miners ate their pasties like that, a complete meal in one, and I have never actually come across this method commercially or otherwise. It would be nice to see this old recipe brought back from the grave..

You are right, Darren. A little apple sauce in one end of the pasty would make it taste like having the main course and dessert all together. We highly recommend having a little apple sauce on the side, as there is plenty of delicious crust on our pasties, and the taste combination is heavenly. Your editor gets hungry just thinking about it!

I was so happy to find a sight on pasties as I am a Upper and now live in Wiconsin and I am planning to get together with my sisters and we are going to try some of those recipes. I had family who worked in the lumber camps and that was a big part of their meals. Now I want to bring this to our children and grandchildren. Arbutus! If It weren't a protected plant, it would be in my little woods at the back of our lot amongst the pines. The scent is wonderful! Someone told me of a wildflower "seed" place - but it was lost in last "malfunction".

Having a great-granddaughter now - made me VERY interested in the new babyfood, "Pasty"! Can't have any more calories than the 1956 cornstarched "bananas" that USED TO BE made. Sounds like a new project for Stillwater to me!

Is it possible to have the pasty-cam get a more detailed view of the lift-bridge while it is under repair? We're planning our annual visit to the UP (Bootjack) in late June through July. As we'll be towing a travel trailer we wonder what stage it'll be in by that time. Oh, by the way, your pasties are on the agenda.

I was intrigued by your photo of the boat in the Bete Gris canal. The boat is actually the "PIONEER" which was owned and operated by Vivian Nordstrom. I spent many happy days and hours on the "PIONEER" as a child and teenager because my family resides at Bete Gris in the summer and in Calumet in the winter. The "PIONEER" had a full superstructure, is about 42 feet in length and was powered by a single Caterpillar diesel. Vivian was a commercial fisherman out of Bete Gris for many years and one of his crew was Hank Aho of Lac LaBelle. Vivian was also one of the children who survived the Italian Hall Massacre of 1913. He was one of those individuals who, although was only formally educated to the 3rd grade level, was one of the most knowledgeable and intelligent people I have met - because he read constantly during those long winter months waiting for the ice to melt on the bay. Vivian, who died in 1982, retired the "PIONEER" toward the end of the '70's and it has rested in this spot since that time. I am currently residing in New York and look at the Pasty Central web site just to get a feel for home in the Copper Country.

Thank you for reminding me of this wonderful man and his boat.

I still marvel at the great work you are all doing. The pastycam photos are a joy to a former Yooper (now a Troll). Since St. Urho's Day is coming soon, I wonder if there are any plans to get some pictures of this event. I'm I correct that St. Urho's day is an invention of some Finns in Minnesota as a reply to the Irish? I'm sure it isn't meant to be adversarial or disrespectful toward good old St. Patrick, but leave it to the peculiar Finnish sense of humor to look at March through a different perspective.

Your recent picture of the bridge and comment about the cam made me wonder, On which side is the Cam located, Hancock or Houghton??

Love this site, most people here in Orlando, have NO idea what a pasty is...... I love to tell them all about them, and then hear them say, "oh sounds good with a little gravy on it". I tell them NOT MY pasties, if you want them the way they are supposed to be made and eaten fine, but no additions or suggestions on the ingredients. Anyways, just wanted you to know how much I enjoy this site. Am anxious for my yearly visit to the U.P. in June, but know that I won't want to come back down here, after being in God's Country for 2 weeks.
