Along US-41 north of Calumet, just down the hill past "The Last Place On Earth", this message has been greeting visitors for who-knows-how-many years... And up around the next bend, the distinctive humps of Cliff Drive rise like a giant wave to welcome you home. Ahh... no place quite like the Keweenaw.

This particular shot was taken some time ago in moonlight by the original Pasty Camster, Jon Hopper. Somehow it got lost in my big shoebox of photos (better known as a computer harddrive) and I found it again rummaging around this morning. Are those the lights of Ahmeek or Copper City in the distance?

This month for everyone who emails us your favorite U.P. photo from your favorite old shoebox, please include your snail-mail address, and we will send you a color postcard of the Snow Thermometer, just a few miles farther up along this highway, the other side of Mohawk.

Not to change the subject, but are you folks going to be sending out any pastys the week after Christmas?

It's Gotta be Copper City, First town to the right on Rte. 41 when you're going north.

Speaking of shoebox memories and "The Last Place on Earth", if anyone out there has a photo of the old "Phillipsville" sign and adjoining building that was just south and uphill from "The Last Place on Earth" it would be greatly appreciated.
Or has that classic sign already made it on Pasty Cam in the past?

By Charlie at Pasty Central on Sunday, December 2, 2001 - 10:07 pm:

Jeff - I don't think the Phillipsville sign has ever been on these pages, but I do recall seeing a picture of it. Like finding a needle in a haystack, though, because we've collected over 25,000 pictures since we started the Pasty Cam almost 4 years ago. We'll keep an eye out for it.

Chris - Yes, we could ship pasties on the 26th (Wednesday) to arrive by the Friday before New Years Eve. Of course, you could order them any time and just pop them in the freezer.

Charlie,
I wish I had a scanner. We have pictures of our kids taken on the swing at the Harbor Haus in Copper Harbor. We first went there the summer of 90 when we were expecting child # 4. She turns 11 on Dec 8th. We have shots of the kids on that swing for 8 years there after. I am hoping Santa gives me a new pentium 4 HP with a scanner and a new computer desk. The oldest is at Central Michigan University this year, and needs this 2 year old computer. Take care, I can't wait for my pasty order. I have to wait till Bill is home on the 12th of December. Thank you so much for all you do for this site. It keeps alll of us stuck in troll land and beyond somewhat sane!:)

Ive spent all my summers as a kid in Phillipsville. The last house on the left across the creek is ours. Great memories!

That has to be Copper City. It is on the wrong side of the sign for Ahmeek. We lived in Copper City for a number of years. My parents still live just outside of Copper City. We did until 9 months ago when we moved to Arizona so my husband could take a job at Grand Canyon National Park.

I used to go with my uncle to see his brother Bert Little in Copper City 40yrs ago.Would like to know more about the history of this so called city, highest Pop.yr.ect.?

By Al Harjala, Ca & Or on Tuesday, December 4, 2001 - 02:20 pm:

Definitely Copper City (which is in Houghton Co. by the way) but "we" were always referred to a Keweenaw, being so-o far out of Calumet! I too have lots of memories of Copper Country living. Left in mid 60's and only get back for reunions as folks moved to Az. 2yrs.ago.
