A couple of years ago the Pasty Cam visited the Ambassador in Houghton for a look at their old murals... almost like a mini-art museum. Now Daryl Laitila takes us back to see what the elves have been brewing.

As a Yooper forced to leave every five weeks for a hitch at sea, I sometimes used to hit the Ambassador for a traditional sub and a fishbowl, first night home. I would stare up at the murals and think about how thankful I was to be back home in the Copper Country. Those murals were just one of the little things that defined being home:)

can anybody give any info on the murals such as who did them and when they we made, and are they actual paintings or wallpaper. i myself have sat there and enjoyed a few fishbowls and subs while looking at the murals

Nothing like the Ambassador and their pizza. Every trip to Houghton requires at least one stop. The murals do have a history and I wish I could remember it. I'm sure someone will. I think there was something to do with them being stored up in the attic and found by accident. Anyone?

Ahh, the Ambassador! A must stop when in Houghton for sure! Every summer we come up, our mouths are watering to eat here. The garlic-chicken pizza is out of this world. I wish the Ambassador would make and ship those pizzas all over the country like the pastycam does pasties. I'd be a weekly customer. I hope that place never changes!

My family and I have to make the Ambassador a must stop every visit to Houghton too. Haven't found anyone who can duplicate the taste of their pizza and subs. Just one of the stops that make the Copper Country unique and home for all us lonely Yoopers.

What I wouldn't give for a Mexican Pizza from the Ambassador, or maybe a Rachel, I can never decide so I always have to eat there at least twice on every vacation. Their pizza is the best I've ever had and I've had great pizza all over the country!

Really enjoy your pasty cam !! Going to retire up there ..not sure about what County yet, but your pics sure give me a feel for the area . More than I'd get from a brochure. Love to have a e-mail pal to chat about the U.P. with. Going to look up Baraga Co. Anyone from that area with spare time to talk about your beautiful area? Thanks pasty cam for making my wait (1-2 years) before being able to move up there, most enjoyable. Love all the cam notes too. By the time I move, I'll have quite a history of the area because of you. Longing to be a yooper! :-)Jackie

I think the murals were commisioned By the Bosch Brewing Company..Anyone know if I am correct?

Fascinating. The pictures remind me very much of the Teeny Weenies that inhabited a comic strip in the 1940's. The creator of them spent a lot of time in and around Grand Marais, and his Pickle Barrel is now being restored there. Did he have any connection with the Ambassador?

They are wallpaper. The artist is from Milwaukee.If you read the menu you will find other than all that good food the history behind the murals. I do belive you can find other murals at the Michigan House in Calumet and at Lindals in Lake Linden

Happy Thanksgiving! Here is a recipe for Cranberry salsa that will put some sun back into this dark November:

Cover one bag worth of cranberries with water in a saucepan; bring to gentle boil for two minutes. Drain and rinse with cold water. Chop coarsely.

In a large bowl, combine cranberries with:

4 tbsp chopped cilantro
1/3 cup lime juice
1/2 tsp salt
1/4 tsp pepper
2 jalapeno peppers, very finely diced (or to taste)
2 tbsp finely chopped onion
1/2 cup sugar

Blend together and chill. Serve with tortilla chips.

I love those murals too. I remember reading
about them on the menu, but that's almost all I
remember. I think they are over a hundred
years old and that they had to be hidden or
covered during Prohibition.

Went to the Ambassador in October for the first time in years. Still great pizza. Made me wonder why it had been so long.

Yes thanks for the correct spelling. The three mentioned buisnesses are from the old Bosch Brewing company. They were the "beer gardens" owned the brewery. I have not been in Lindells, but the Michigan House and the Ambassador have alot of the original light fixtures and furnishings. Just another way to check out the history of the area and quinch your thirst

I also rember the Teeny Weenies and have been trying to get more information on them. My sister and I used to cut them out and put them in a scrap book. I would lve for my grandchildren to see them.
