For July 2001 we devote 2 days to our monthly remembrance:

Ed Hoffman
Tom Mottonen
Edward Gary Curtin
Beverly Dodge
Mary Harp
Mary Margaret Uren
Hulda Moilanen
Evelyn Alatalo
Ray St. Peter
John Paduan

Where do I begin?... so many memories I could share. Three of these folks were residents at Still Waters (Mary Harp, Evelyn Alatalo, Ray St. Peter.) Ray and Evelyn have been seen several times here on the Pasty Cam...(the stories I could tell!). But let me just tell you about a letter I received on Friday, July 13th.

On top of the stack of correspondence at my desk that day, I spotted a wrinkled envelope with a photo enclosed. It had been carefully secured to a piece of cereal box with plastic wrap, along with this shaky handwritten note:
"Gentlemen:

I have been really enjoying Pasty Central since I got a computer. Enclosed is a picture I took early one morning, which I hope you will like well enough to use on the Pasty Cam. This is looking east from my deck into one of the many bays on Portage Lake, Hancock.

Sincerely,
Margaret Uren"
I was fascinated by the picture, a hazy silhouette of the glowing sun, in its first moments of overcoming night's darkness. It's the sunrise shot you see above.

I put Margaret's letter down and walked into the Still Waters lobby, where the Mining Gazette had just arrived. There on the front page was a headline about an 80-year old Hancock resident who, as a result of an accident, had passed away that morning... Mary Margeret Uren.

We honor the lives of each individual noted in this month's memorial. It's the first time one of them was also an honored guest photographer.

I love pasty.com and the fabulous pictures every day. I greatly enjoy my daily visits to the UP. I took the sunset picture above at my mom's place on Lake Superior on July 14, 2001, the evening that my uncle and godfather, Ed Hoffman, passed. I thought you might be able to use it for your end of the month memorial picture.

Keep up the great work.

Thanks for adding Beverly Dodge to your July memorials. She never visited the UP as far as I know, but she very much enjoyed prints of your daily photos in her last days, especially those of sunsets, flowers, and lighthouses.

Also, Jane Krinitski, a long time resident of Houghton and Agate Harbor passed away last week.

What a touching story, Charlie! Thanks for all the care you put into our beautiful web site. There is always a bit of eager anticipation when I hit the "Enter" button and see the blue and yellow background for Pasty.com start to dawn on the screen. By the way, if Bill Penprase is hanging around Keweenaw, make sure he tries to get together with Eagle Harbor George. I'd love to be a fly on the wall listening if they ever get together!

I would like to add my mother, Dagmar Puttonen, who passed away June 30, just missing your July memorials. She would have liked these photos. Thanks.

I ALWAYS LOOK FORWARD TO THIS TIME OF THE YEAR. ONE OF THE WAYS THAT I PREPARE FOR OUR TRIP TO COPPER COUNTRY IS TO PULL UP PASTY.COM
CHARLIE YOU ARE STILL MAINTAINING A GREAT SITE. HOPE TO SEE YOU SOON.

It's tough living down here (near the Ohio, Michigan border) when so much beauty is going on up there. I find this web-site to be my life-line to a better life. Each day I work hard to finish these loose ends down-state, before I can make the move to the UP. In the meantime I've depended on this site to give me a daily dose of pleasure. Thanks for the great connection.

Such a remarkable sunrise, accompanied by an even more remarkable story! I'd like to think that Margaret was given an opportunity to say a special goodbye to her loved ones and to her beautiful U.P. in this very unique way.

I'd also like to remember my friend's brother, Doug MacBeth, who died on July 21st in a tragic plane crash at the American Hatz Association Midwest regional fly-in in Popular Grove IL. This dynamic man touched so many lives, and at the age of 48, was taken far too soon. Please keep his loved ones in your prayers, as well as his EAA & AHA friends, many of whom will be flying in from Oshkosh for Doug's memorial service this Saturday.

No day is complete for us without a visit to the Pasty Cam. Thanks for your beautiful work and continued dedication, Charlie!

I would like to add my Mom & Dad's dog "Laddie" who they had to put to sleep on the 27th. He spent 2 weeks, every summer of his life, in the UP for the past 11 years. We will miss him when we go up next week but will always think of him when we go for a walk on the beach. Thanks!

By Karen Spaeth, WI on Wednesday, August 1, 2001 - 11:39 pm:

Whoops... that was supposed to be Poplar Grove, not Popular. Sorry for the error.

Thanks for the memorial to Mr. Curtin. He was a good man.

By Carol - Michigan on Monday, May 17, 2004 - 10:23 pm:

Thank you for the memorial to my aunt, Hulda
Moilanen, of Eagle River. No one loved Keweenaw
any more than she did!
