Off to another exciting season of summer camping in the U.P. - scouting camps, athletic camps, forestry camps, and Bible camps... of which Gitche Gumee is today's Pasty Cam subject. The fist week every year is for the junior-age group, followed by Junior High kids next week, then the High Schoolers in July. The rest of the season will see campers of all ages, as the barrack style dorms are converted into family living units. Lot's of Vollwerth hot dogs will be in attendance as well.

I just couldn't resist this one, a cute camper named Madeline who demonstrates the use of the roasting stick, and a pitfall to avoid. Sure hope that bite was taken before the sand was applied ;o}

with thanks to Andy Lamppa

looks like she didn't make the 5 second rule on that dog there....so no wiping it off and eating it.

What a sight. I lived in the U.P. in my childhood (1950's) and at 51 I still visit every summer and roasting the Vollworths at the beach campfire still rates high on my things to do list. Just three weeks to go til I build the fire. Can't wait.

Looks great. Reminds me of my youth at the cottage on Five Mile Point and 'wrapping up in a blanket' around the campfire. Thanks for the good memories. Hope every one at Gitche Gumee has a fun filled, spiritual blessing this summer. Which I know they will with the great Bible teaching they will get there.

The pictures and name of Gitche Gumee Bible Camp bring back many fond memories of my youth. I am glad to see it is still going, bringing joy and building memories for the youth of today.

THIS SIDE OF HEAVEN... LITTLE COMPARES WITH SUMMERS AT GITCHE GUMEE. THE SMILING FACES, LAUGHTER, HOT DOGS ON THE BEACH, AND WONDERFUL FRIENDSHIPS MADE FOR LIFE. THE SWEET, SWEET SPIRIT FOUND THERE IS GOD AT WORK THROUGH HIS "WORD" AND CAMP STAFF WHO LOVE HIM... JOHN RADER'S VISION FOR A PLACE TO "COME APART" LIVES ON.. PTL

Thanks for the shots of one of my favorite places, Charlie. Just looking at the pictures I can taste those hotdogs rosted over the fire after fun and games in the sand and surf, washed down with plenty of lemonade. Yummy! I hope to someday introduce our two little ones to Gitche, but it will be a few years yet, I'm sure, before we are able to make it back. I miss you all.

My grandfather,Bill Fischer, worked for Vollworths in the 50's. We would come up from Chicago and one of the highlights of the trip would be the package packages of hot dogs and summer sausage we got to take back to Illinois. Today I have Vollworths send gift packages to my brother and sister at Christmas.
