Over the years we have been doing the Pasty Cam, lots of pictures, current and historic, have been sent our way. Somewhere along the line, this shot ended up in my inbox, and I'm not able to find who sent it.

It's kind of rainy and foggy today in the Keweenaw, and the mist in the hills of this scene appear much the way it looked today when Jonathan and Casey and I took a long walk through the woods, exploring some ridges which looked alot like these.

Who are the two guys in this picture? Are they petting a dog, playing patty-cake, or passing a peace-pipe?

Have any idea where it's at?

That looks like a building at the old mill at Lac La Belle. Where those men are sitting could be the base for the smokestack; it possibly is still there but the mill has long ago been destroyed. It looks familiar and you can find pictures of the mill in the Lac La Belle history by Clarence J. Monette. The mill was located on the hill to the right as you take the right fork when entering Lac La Belle. Some ruins probably remain. That mill was built by the Delaware Mining Company to process the rock for the mine where tourist now visit.

Bill P:

Are you suggesting that the body of water (or is it a field?) on the left side of the picture is Lac La Belle??

By Bill P.,Ca. on Saturday, April 21, 2001 - 10:30 am:

ML,Utah--

Yes,it could be the east corner of the lake where the little stream below Haven Falls flows in. The area between the water and the trees looks like the marsh area and stampsand that was very pronounced before the marshes were cleared and trees started to grow into the stampsand area. It doesn't fit completely in my memory but that's my first thought when I saw the picture.

Bill, I couldn't agree more even before I saw your post. The old stamp mill at Lac La Belle popped into my mind. It has to be even the back ground is right.

CORRECTION - or as they say in the newspaper: For the Record!!! The first line in my April 21 post should read:"Yes, it could be the northwest corner of the lake ......" An old navigator should not make that mistake.

MY husband seems to think that this is a picture of the old mining site in LacLaBelle. Was located near Haven Park.

T'at's da stony knoll dere on da upper right where one co-conspirator can be seen handing da "smoking knife" to anudder.
Da real question is dis. Whoose dat man in da white cap running downhill straight below da roof peak dere?
I say t'at's Jacques "Fleet Feet" Le Bete t'ough udders claim hit's really just a close-up of a bush.

By Bill P. on Sunday, April 22, 2001 - 06:34 pm:

Those men have to be Cousin Jacks because one of them has a bowler on his head.

By Betty, Houston on Sunday, April 22, 2001 - 08:36 pm:

OK - what's a "bowler"?

By Bill P ,Ca on Monday, April 23, 2001 - 12:26 am:

A bowler is a derby hat. The man on the right is wearing one.

By Betty, Houston on Monday, April 23, 2001 - 03:51 pm:

Did the Cousin Jacks typically wear bowlers? Bill P CA - you are so interesting!

By Bill P.,Ca. on Monday, April 23, 2001 - 08:20 pm:

Thanks Betty - Yes it was common for young Cornishmen to wear bowlers at special times especially when they were trying to attract the attention of the young ladies.
