Mary Drew at Pasty Central on Wednesday, July 21, 2004 - 06:40 am:

A cozy U.P. campsite, complete with a little fire going to cook dinner. Only breathing thing in sight is the pooch lying so comfortably on the beach! Of course someone had to take the photograph, so Joyce Tormala steps up for today's honors with a double shot. I'm taking for granted that the pup watching the clothes in the second photo is the same one on the shoreline staring dreamily out at the water. Looks like this canine sure knows how to live... take in a bit of sun, then head for the shade to cool off!

How do you know those are not the dogs clothes?

By Donna on Wednesday, July 21, 2004 - 07:11 am:

Beautiful dog!! What a great companion for an outing on that gorgeous lake!

By maijaMI on Wednesday, July 21, 2004 - 07:14 am:

hope Sharon Smith's bears don't come down to raid that tent! I notice her bird feeder is down today.

By Jim R, Royal Oak on Wednesday, July 21, 2004 - 07:17 am:

I don't remember giving anyone permission to take a picture of my home! What a away to relax and get re-oriented with life!

By BCT,mi on Wednesday, July 21, 2004 - 07:19 am:

Yes ,pretty dog. Anyone know if there's a place to post "I need a ride to the CC" with it's particulars.

By UP_gal on Wednesday, July 21, 2004 - 07:21 am:

Now MY dog would be eyeing up those shoes for a nice long chew! dogs just LOOK innocent. LOL

By Margaret, Amarillo TX on Wednesday, July 21, 2004 - 07:38 am:

Mornin', I know that dog. Lives in my back yard. How'd he get up there without me?

By Pete Wi. on Wednesday, July 21, 2004 - 07:46 am:

Oh man that sure makes me think of when we used to camp at the mouth of the Gratiot. That was a great spot. Is that still accessable to the public or has it too been gobbled up by someone and made off limits?

By Charlie at Pasty Central on Wednesday, July 21, 2004 - 07:56 am:

A couple of notes for Pasty Cam regulars... We have added the live webcam from Houghton County Airport to the "Lift Bridge Cam" page, giving a live mid-peninsula view to go along with the Copper Harbor and Portage Canal extremes. If you tune in at the right times you can even watch the planes loading and unloading. Our thanks to Houghton County Airport's manager Dennis Hext for allowing us to look out his office window.

Also this morning we updated the master Guest Gallery list of albums. There are now over 10,000 photos from over 200 guest photographers! A body could spend all day browsing the sub-albums and slide shows. Pretty amazing what you will find...

By Larry-IN on Wednesday, July 21, 2004 - 08:38 am:

Sad to hear that the office dog at Lake Superior magazine "Huck" passed away recently. I had the chance to meet him twice at their Duluth office....it has been a steady stream of dog losses this year. (including my good boy Clark)

Nice spread in the latest issue on a dog who lived the good life along the shores of Lake Superior

By gasp! on Wednesday, July 21, 2004 - 08:40 am:

That "dog" ate the person, clear down to his shoes!

By Mr. Wheatman, South end on Wednesday, July 21, 2004 - 08:59 am:

Ahh a solitary littoral bivouac. A fine way to unwind indeed. Kudos on the fine shot.

By SharonS on Wednesday, July 21, 2004 - 09:04 am:

FYI, the bear was back around 5 yesterday afternoon, but the reason you didn't see the feeders this morning is that I take them in every night to protect against critters, and they don't get put out in the morning until I'm up and about...and I DON'T keep Mary's hours!

By CP, Commerce Twp. MI on Wednesday, July 21, 2004 - 09:14 am:

It does'nt get any better then that! Can't wait to get up there, the first week of August cannot come soon enough!

By Cindy in Iowa on Wednesday, July 21, 2004 - 09:46 am:

Good Morning Pasty. Com,

Thanks for adding in the airport to our live shots. Hopefully I will have better luck in seeing an airplane land than I do trying to catch the bridge in an up-position. Oh well, I keep trying!

I think the longhorn needs to be lakeside with the dog, not just at the airport!

Thanks and take care,
Cindy

By Jack in CT on Wednesday, July 21, 2004 - 09:48 am:

Could it be any more perfect than that?
I second UP_gal in that my dogs would be playing tug of war with the clothes and spreading them down the beach!

By Mary Ann, WY on Wednesday, July 21, 2004 - 09:53 am:

Wish I were there. What a place to camp, and then of course to have ones best friend with too.

By shelly/Yankee in Texas on Wednesday, July 21, 2004 - 10:18 am:

No wonder that pooch is smiling!! He's got it made in the shade!!

Great picture!

Nice Longhorn as well!

By yahoo in flatland on Wednesday, July 21, 2004 - 10:22 am:

Jim in Greenville, that is excellent!
Oh the places that Longhorn could go with a little editing...
it would be fun to see him on the bridge!

(12 days til I get to the Keweenaw!)

I have heard tell that "Gods country is everywhere". Well, maybe that's true. But I think He spent a little more time on the U P. Have a great day......

By Joyce Tormala Toivola on Wednesday, July 21, 2004 - 10:49 am:

My first online task is to check out the picture of the day on my home page. I was surprised to see this friendly, familiar face. This puppy was a surprise birthday gift, given to 9 year old twin brothers by their older sister. Very smart! We couldn't break their hearts by refusing such a generous offering.
That was 9 years ago and we are still enjoying this "gift dog." She is a wonderful family member, a friend to guests and a soft pillow for the cats to rest their heads upon.
She has been our hiking companion since day one. I would carry the tired puppy over fallen trees, tangled weeds and over hot sand and rocks. She has sinced learned all of the rules, except one: running to meet and greet everyone!
Thank you for putting our dedicated family member in a place she deserves-the spotlight!

By Yooper girl far from home on Wednesday, July 21, 2004 - 10:51 am:

Lucky day for me! I hit the bridge cam in time to see a boat speeding beneath, then the airport cam in time to see a plane! Is there a prize for this great double feat? I think just seeing them is prize enough!

By Kim near Lansing on Wednesday, July 21, 2004 - 10:55 am:

The picture is of "Rowdy" the longhorn bull. It was taken in Dade City Florida, he belongs to the country and western singers, The Belamey Brother's.

By elroybuskaamaki on Wednesday, July 21, 2004 - 10:59 am:

pete, Wi

the mouth of the gratiot is still accessable. take a left by the cemetary on 5 mile pt road out of ahmeek, you'll find the gratiot road.

By Debbie - Painesdale on Wednesday, July 21, 2004 - 10:59 am:

Joyce, very nice picture! Looks like one of the best places to be. Wish I could talk my hubby into pitching a tent in a spot like that during vacation. No cares in the world, just the lake, sun, and the dog.........

By UP dreamer stuck in NJ on Wednesday, July 21, 2004 - 11:02 am:

Wow, I'm getting all misty looking at that tent on the beach. I would give ANYTHING to be sleeping there tonight! Alas, all vacation plans had to be scrapped this summer due to my husband shattering his heel & requiring surgery to have it put back together. NEXT year it's the UP for me...or else!

By mckenneyp, GR MI on Wednesday, July 21, 2004 - 12:06 pm:

Hey I just noticed something that I had never picked up on before. I was watching the time lapse for the Lift Bridge and realized that in the winter they had the upper deck for driving, so the bridge was all the way down. Is this normal? Does it always go all the way down for the winter?

By Sadie on Wednesday, July 21, 2004 - 12:07 pm:

I ran across some words I am not familiar with. Can someone please translate them for me, and how are they pronounced. What are they?
1 - mini vaalea jalkelainen
2 - juustaa
3 - nissua
4 - What is maltex?
Thank you for your help.

Editor's note: Correct me if I'm wrong, please...
1 - 'mini blond child'
2 - 'finnish squeaky cheese'
3 - 'finnish sweet bread'
4 - 'breakfast cereal'
Your welcome! :->

By Jon, Ypsilanti on Wednesday, July 21, 2004 - 12:08 pm:

To elroybuskaamaki - I always recall going to Mouth of Gratiot via a road off Farmer's block. that is down the road a ways from the cemetary.

That may have changed now that the county has a park there. I have not been out there in 20+ years...

By Jon, Ypsilanti on Wednesday, July 21, 2004 - 12:12 pm:

mckenneyp, I believe the bridge is in the down position during the winter so that the snowmobilers can cross the canal without having to worry about the thin ice..

At least that is what I recall hearing in the past..

By BCT,mi on Wednesday, July 21, 2004 - 12:27 pm:

I'm still wondering about getting a ride to Eagle Harbor. Can help with driving and gas.

88 degrees in Houghton today. Beautiful!! I may just go swimming in the big lake if it hits 100. Let's hope for triple digits.

By FRNash/PHX, AZ on Wednesday, July 21, 2004 - 02:15 pm:

More for sadie (and our editor):

1 - mini vaalea jalkelainen <-- "mini"? Not Finnish! (maybe "mini as in miniature?) *
2 - juustaa <-- "juustoa": cheese
3 - nissua <-- Only one 's' here: -- "nisu" or "nisua" (aka "pulla")
4 - What is maltex?

* Note(1): ... but close to "minun" = "my" (Huh ?)
... as in: "minun vaalea jalkelainen" = "my blond offspring"

alternately: "nuori vaalea lapsi" = "young blond child"
nuori: young
vaalea: blonde, white, pale, fair
jälkeläinen: offspring
lapsi: child, minor, tot, brat, kid, infant, baby

I am still laughing about "Detroit Left." Getting hungry for some squeaky cheese. I remember Reino buying that at the Pelkie Co-op when we'd be there on vacation. Two weeks from tomorrow, Tapiola here we come.

By Lorelei, MI on Wednesday, July 21, 2004 - 05:01 pm:

I think this picture is taken up the shore from Agate Beach. My favorite beach of all time.

By Rute A. Begga, MI on Wednesday, July 21, 2004 - 05:34 pm:

I am such a U.P. fan that in my trip from Detroit to Oshkosh, Wisconsin next week (the huge airshow), I am driving through the U.P. to go to a town roughly in the center of Wisconsin. It is a lot faster to drive I-94 through Chicago, but I would rather drive several extra hours in light traffic with nice scenery, savoring pasties along the way than sit in gridlock and look up at mile after mile of high rise housing projects.

By the way, I hope it hit 95 degrees for about 30 days in a row for you vacationers and residents up there so you can really enjoy the summer. It's been too cool in Michigan this summer. I heard the Global Warming fundraiser guy from Houghton got laid off this year and is now selling down jackets.

By Joyce Tormala Toivola on Wednesday, July 21, 2004 - 05:41 pm:

The beach picture? It was taken North of the Agate Beach park in Toivola, past Rockhouse point and about a quarter of a mile from there. A friend and I pitched a tent and spent a couple days swimming, rock hunting, hiking and just plain loafing! It was great. To our surprise there was a meteor shower that night and we enjoyed the show with the waves quietly providing the backround music.
To recharge my batteries after a busy day, I hike along the beach until I find a good spot to take a nap, usually near cedar, and doze to the sounds and scents. As always, the loyal dog is at my side, guarding my shoes and supply bag! We must take advantage of those rare moments when no clock is necessary. This free medicine is good for the body and soul,eh.

Hey, Sadie,

Here's a link, in case you want to make your own squeaky cheese:

If you're in the Copper Country, you can buy it in the grocery store. If not, or if you'd prefer to order it, try this:

By Sadie on Wednesday, July 21, 2004 - 06:00 pm:

Thank you FRNash/PRX,AZ...Sounds like an interesting and tasty cheese. Is the Finish language spoken a lot in your area, and Upper Peninsula? Is it passed down to the younger generation? And do they show an interest in it as a second language? Or do you speak "Finglish" which I have heard, is not really understood by the people of Finland?

By Sadie on Wednesday, July 21, 2004 - 06:03 pm:

Suomalainen tytto = daughter of Finland ?

By Ms. Quilt/LP on Wednesday, July 21, 2004 - 08:10 pm:

Do you make quilts up there at all or do you all do Sweedish weaving? Where do the Finlanders come from, Minnesota? Again, when can we start purchasing Pasties again on line?

I don't blame you! If I had the time, I would do the same thing!
But just FYI, they finally tore down 99% of those ugly, depressing Housing Project High-Rises that used to stand next to the evil Dan Ryan Expressway.

By Knuuttila's in the Twin Cities on Thursday, July 22, 2004 - 12:35 am:

Joyce,
You made my day! Jim and I were just talking about how much we miss Agate Beach and Da Bush!

By FRNash/PHX, AZ on Thursday, July 22, 2004 - 03:44 am:

Sadie:

Is the Finish language spoken a lot in your area, and Upper Peninsula?
Not much in Phoenix, AZ, but certainly in "da U.P." (pardon my local dilect).
Even the street signs in Hancock, MI -- the home of
Finlandia University and The Finnish American Heritage Center -- are in both English and Finnish!

Is it passed down to the younger generation?
Somewhat, but not nearly enough in my opinion -- at least when I was a young 'un my folks switched to Finnish when they wanted to exclude me from the conversation (so of course you just know what bits of Finnish I learned first!)

And do they show an interest in it as a second language?
I know there are Finnish language classes in The Hancock, MI Public School System, and perhaps other local schools, and many decades later I'm still learning -- the grammar (seventeen cases!) is still a challenge!

Or do you speak "Finglish" ...
I'd say that's a very accurate characterization -- except for Finnish language textbooks, that's all I've been exposed to.
...which I have heard, is not really understood by the people of Finland?
There are some definite differences!

By FRNash/PHX, AZ on Thursday, July 22, 2004 - 03:55 am:

Sadie:

Suomalainen tytto = daughter of Finland?
Well not quite.
Suomi = Finland
Soumalainen = Finnish (of or relating to a person or thing)
tyttö = girl
(but tytär = daughter!)
so "Suomalainen tytto" = "Finnish girl"

Ruth A Begga, Mi.... et al....On your way through the UP to the EAA.....better to buy your pasties before you get to ......Escanaba........We are under a "boil water" advisory for the next couple of days..we had a broken water 16" water pipe at the source and it may have contaminated our system....We now have water pressure restored but must boil the water for consumption. Lots of comments on this picture!!! That camper is probably on private property and in danger of arrest and fine and harrassment. We all need to become aware of how our beaches are becoming off limits to all but the wealthy. Keeping shoreline accesbile to all is paramount to preserving the Keweenaw Peninsula as a land for all people. If you love this area, click on to the Pasty.com links to Nature Conservancy, Hunter's Point, etc. Pay attention or this picture may be the closest any of us get to camping on the beach again.
