Take me out to the ball game! This little poika is from the Spring Training camp of Kim Beyer. Correct that, maybe it should read, 'potty training camp'! Looks like he just might have the power to knock that ball off the tee, way out into right field. Only trouble is, he's not quite sure which is his right and which is his left yet. Just give him time though, before you know it this little Babe will be breaking home run records! Play ball!

<Toivo sez>: Look again, Ralph. Appears that Mohawk beat you to the draw for the Early Bird honors - - or maybe should have been the Night Owl :o)

Toivo, didn't we see this guy's older brothers, the boys of summer, a couple of years ago on the Pasty Cam?

Sticky fun

By Yooper-To-Be in 2005, Saginaw, MI on Saturday, May 8, 2004 - 12:42 am:

Anyone know what happened with the fire at the Bella Vista in Copper Harbor? Motel units or cottage involved? Also, is it illegal to grill out in any of the roadside parks in Houghton or Keweenaw counties? We thought about doing that this summer, but we won't do it if it means breaking any rules.

Kids have always been a part of this daily feature. The Pasty Cam began back in '98 with a newborn - Alex Voelker (above) - grandson of the president of Village of Calumet, Tony Bausano. Over the past seven years, some of the most memorable 'glimpses of life in the U.P.' have been the kids. Here's a dozen just in the past year:
from Lauri Kneeboneby David Robertsby Michael and Patricia Forgrave
by Kim Beyerby Mark Ponttiby David Roberts
by Roger Kangasby Donn de Yampertby Keith Meyers
by Kim Beyerfrom Dan pipewrench70Mom and Mom

Couldn't resist adding that last pair of shoebox memory photos from a year ago. The baby in the basket is my mother-in-law, and the little girl on the far right is my Mom, both of whom have spent some great times with us here in the U.P., and to whom we send an early Happy Mother's Day.

Also, congratulations this week on the latest addition to the Pasty Central family, as new Mom Melissa Schneiderhan gave birth to Ani Bernadette on Monday at Portage Hospital in Hancock. Ani's dad John is a key staff member of Pasty.NET, heading up our high-speed wireless installations. Our best wishes to the Schneiderhans of Calumet.

On a future edition of Pasty.com, it would be interesting to see photos of dogs against a scenic U.P. backdrop. Dogs at waterfalls, dogs in rivers, dogs at the top of a scenic vista, dogs eating pasties, etc...

Children is what makes the world go 'round. Nothin' cuter than a little Yooper!! (escpecially if they're eating a Stillwater pasty or a roll from the Hilltop!!)
Like me & Dan from Fenton, they are lucky enough to be born & raised in the peaceful setting of the Copper Country.
Cute pictures!! Keep em' coming!!
(I think we all have a picture of us as children by the flag pole at Ft. Wilkens)

By Joe Morris, Kalamazoo on Saturday, May 8, 2004 - 09:24 am:

How ironic! I feed my dog pasties every Wednesday night, pasty night at our house. I thought I was the only one who fed my dog pasties, so it's nice to see I'm not alone. The one thing about feeding dogs pasties is that you do not want to cook them with vegetable shortening, you want to use strictly lard because it is natural and better for their digestive systems. As my dog ages, he tends to leave the carrots behind, but he sure loves the meat filler and crust! Sparky is a fourteen year old black lab who is fit as a fiddle, so I think pasties once a week may be the key to his longevity.

By camwatcher on Saturday, May 8, 2004 - 10:13 am:

In givng pasties to dogs: Should we avoid rutabagas, for the obvious reason ? LOL
My dog just loves pasties and gives me the sad eyes util he gets some. Who could blame him ?
( No ketchup for him, he is a purist. )

Michele Grisez has some shots of her puppy "Ginger" in the Guest Gallery, enjoying the view and the fresh air up on Brockway:

Ginger
...and next time you're up on the Mountain, the nearest place for a hot Pasty Central pasty is down in Copper Harbor at the Tamarack Restaurant. Just yesterday Bill Degowski picked up a load of pasties from Still Waters, to prepare for all of the Keweenaw sightseers who are here ahead of the black flies.

Ah - nothing better than kids and dogs enjoying the UP! I spent many summer vacations up there when I was growing up. My kids and I are coming up for the 4th of July in Copper Harbor. Does anyone know the details of the fire at the Bella Vista? Of course we will go to the Tamarack and have a pasty!

This an especially uplifting page today! Thanx for all the cuties, Kids and Dogs alike!
Happy Mother's day to all us Moms....Whether we gave birth or adopted, or "stepped" up to the plate, or ...are just maternal when our loved ones need us. Love Makes the World Go Round!

Kids and dogs - doesn't get any better. Very heartwarming. Of course the gorgeous scenery is a big plus too! This is the best website of all time - - pleasant photos and shared memories. Such a delightful way to begin the day, and what a great haven for those who prefer beauty and decency. That's why it is so popular. There's no comparison in today's world. May it always stay the same. Thank you and God Bless to all the folks providing us with pasty.com!!!

Did anyone notice that the episode of "Food Finds" on the Food Network that featured the Jampot was on this afternoon at 2:30? I stumbled across it, and enjoyed it immensly. Are the baked goods really as scrumptious as they looked on t.v.?

Just a suggestion to all you dog fans- there are some
very nice dogs that are waiting for loving homes at the
Humane Society in your area....I, for one, would like to
adopt Magic at the Hancock shelter.

By Steve the flying troll on Saturday, May 8, 2004 - 07:54 pm:

Thanks CCfan........I concur.......We run the second oldest animal 501 c 3 in Michigan and are proud that on Charity Naviagator that we are the only 4 star organization listed. We have 11 paid staff, hundreds of volunteers, and an unpaid Board of Directors. We have almost 9000 animals per year pass through our doors, and too many face touch choices because our inner city neighbors breed pit bulls and other dogs for money and then abandon them. We are an inner city Detroit animal shelter that will never leave, because that is where the need is. We have partnered up with various pet supply chains that provide space and support in our satellite adoption program. Please........SPAY OR NEUTER
We are tired of having to make the choice that 92% of the the animals that go to humane organizations face.......Please don't tell me about "no kill" shelters...When they are full, they are full. Your animal may spend years in a cage waiting for adoption. These issues are too well known to us. We will not turn away any animal. Again...it is so simple....SPAY and NEUTER to prevent unwanted animals. PS...this problem is statewide....not just the city....

to Steve the Flying Troll: I do so much wish that everyone in the world could hear your message. I congratulate you for what you do!

By ywb/yooperwannabe/richmond on Saturday, May 8, 2004 - 10:40 pm:

Steve The Flying Troll,
Glad you had a safe journey.
My daughters co-own a beagle. We adopted him at just over a year old. Scooby is now over 3 years old. It took a while for old habits to pass, but I'm proud to say what a great dog he has turned into. Yes, he has been "taken care of"! Everyone, please look at the little bit older pups. The older dogs need homes too. A little patience and your dog will be so loyal to you!
Have a great weekend.
Happy Mothers Day to all!!!!!

By CCfan on Saturday, May 8, 2004 - 11:26 pm:

My hat's off to you, Steve the Flying Troll, for giving
those homeless dogs a chance. And folks, like Steve
mentioned, please spay or neuter. This country has
thousands of homeless pets waiting to be adopted. Just
go to petfinder.org and check out the ones who need
'forever homes' in your area. Maybe you'll find your new
best friend! Hope it is alright to make this message on
here, Charlie! thanks.
I love the photo of the cute little ball player today. I once
read that Harpo Marx 's wish was to see a child's happy
face beaming out of every window when he came
home from work.

By John Dee - Lake Linden, MI on Sunday, May 9, 2004 - 10:29 am:

You folks might want to forgo the act of giving your dogs treats like Pastys or anything else that contains a lot of fat. A dog (or even human for that matter) can develop a serious illness called pancreatitis. One of the causes is a meal containing lots of fat. One of my labs just had to battle that illness and we almost lost her. We are not sure if it was from diet (she did get leftovers quite a bit) or something else.
In any case, it is not worth risking a dogs life just to give it some human food that contains fat and both of my labs are now on high quality dog food and dog treats only. Save the pastys for yourself!

-John

By SC - Glenview, IL on Monday, May 10, 2004 - 04:50 pm:

The fire at the Bella Vista involved the building that housed the office, not the motel or cabins. The office looks like a total loss.

By walter p tampa on Monday, May 10, 2004 - 09:52 pm:

john dee one thing on pancreatitis several things can cause the problem one of course one is etoh abuse another is stones enzymes will damage the prancreas and will cause diabetis and also will not be able to break down carbs. and fats not the other way around one would notice nausea vomiting rapid heart rate upper quadrent pain ect. sometimes one attack can lead to death. the problem can also be chronic but be adressed early on any change in behavior should send up a red flag ect..
