Hi-
I really like your website, especially the pictures. You have lots of nice ones on here. The pasty cam, is there anyway you could make it so you don't have to keep pressing update?
HI Mike-I know you read this!

Lisa, We're not sure what you mean by "pressing update". Looking at Netscape and Internet Explorer, we can't find an update button. Maybe you're refering to the update of the "Bridge Cam" ?? We could make it so that it refreshes the view every time a new picture is uploaded. Let me know if that is what you had in mind:

Daryl, thanks for the tip. The site was really interesting. The students (or Jim) did a nice job of putting it together.

By Daryl on Tuesday, November 28, 2000 - 08:31 am:

Lucy, take a look at this site:
http://pasty.com/finnish/

There are Finnish classes at Hancock High School
and this site highlights some of the traditional
customs for Christmas.

By Lucy, TX on Tuesday, November 28, 2000 - 02:31 am:

I grew up in the Copper Country with a Finnish grandma, but I don't remember any Finnish customs having to do with Christmas. I've been thinking more about my heritage lately and was wondering - does anybody out there know of any special customs that Finns have in celebrating Christmas, either with food or decorations or anything else? I'd appreciate any information.

By Mike Ellis, Redford, MI. on Monday, November 27, 2000 - 03:20 pm:

AAAHH!!! Just got back from a trip to the Copper Counrty. Was there for the Thanksgiving holiday week and weekend. Good to see the snow that fell on Monday and Tuesday. Makes me homesick!!
I was hoping that the pasty-cam would have more pictures of the snow!!! It was looking like the middle of December.
Lisa if you're reading this, hello!! :o)

By Peggy, Tulsa, Oklahoma on Monday, November 27, 2000 - 01:54 pm:

Thank you, StillWaters, for the best pasties in the country! We had some shipped to friends in Florida and then flew down there to share a pasty meal. What a treat!

Hey Florida,
I noticed you several times on this site and you especially got my attention when you asked for pictures of Lake Linden in the Cam Notes. I'm from Lake Linden too! E-mail and let me know who you are. We probably know each other! And besides, you're always looking for pictures up here, I'm always checking out Florida sites! We sort of have something in common!

By alicia marshall on Sunday, November 19, 2000 - 12:25 pm:

Jussi, from checking the Finnish migration site, i found that all four Metteri's did emigrate to Calumet at the same time.Hugo,Lyylia,Martha,Pauli, and Toivo on 05-22-1904.It is an invaluable site for finding your Finnish ancestors. You can access passport or ships passenger records to find out what part of Finland your people came from.
If anyone wants the site i can post it or send it to them.Be warned...once you use it you will get hooked on doing your geneology!HISKI is also a useful link but somewhat difficult to use until you get used to it's links.

To "Pasty" in New Zealand: How about a photograph of a pasty shoe??! (I'll bet any pup would consider one of those a great meal :).)

By Mr Jussi Metteri on Friday, November 17, 2000 - 03:45 am:

Does someone know something about Ed Metteri ? Who were his parents ? Did he came from Finland and when ? Did he have sisters, brothers, children ?

Ed had a sister who took care of all his business affairs. He was a resident at Still Waters for many years, as far as I know never married, worked in the mines. We have a little write-up on Ed in a previous Eye of the Pasty Cam

By Pasty, New Zealand on Sunday, November 12, 2000 - 11:23 pm:

Did you know that a type of shoe, distinctive with its pastry-like seam, was named after the pasty? Pasty shoes are extremely popular in Great Britain.

By CheddarJohn on Friday, November 10, 2000 - 05:32 pm:

Why not a PastyCam shot of the US Hwy 41 sign? Especially appropriate at this time to show that, at the top, the Yoopers have THEIR voting house in order. Munch on a pasty while awaiting the returns!

And, fellow Yooper Lutherans, have a pasty today to celebrate Martin Luther's birthday. Martin was born on this date in 1483. I hear eating a pasty while reading the "Small Catechism" is an event NOT too be missed.

Thanks to all who checked out my web site: http://www.geocities.com/brandedhand/ . Remember, it's still there if you haven't seen it yet!

Anything before housework!

By Alicia Marshall,MI. on Wednesday, November 8, 2000 - 01:45 pm:

Hi all,
I bought a book about customs in Finland, and discovered that the Finnish also have long made pasties. They are called piirakka's.They are a Karelian pasty baked in a rye dough with either a rice or potato filling.Hope i get treated to one when we vist there next year.
Also a plug for our two local geneology sites that you can access through www.rootsweb.com.We have one for Keweenaw and Houghton counties both.Click on the state and then pick your county.
Geneology before housework!

By Daniel on Wednesday, November 8, 2000 - 03:33 am:

i am just wondering if there are any yoopers in the san diego area.

By Debbie T. GreenBay, WI on Tuesday, November 7, 2000 - 10:12 pm:

Hey UP. One of my co-workers told me about your site. It's greaaat! There are a half-dozen of us displaced Yoopers teaching here at Pulaski High School. I'm from Mohawk (my nickname-Booty).
I've been teaching in GB for 20 years but get back to Mohawk several times a year. Would love to hear from any other Yoopers or Yooper lovers out there. I'll be there at Christmas-let it snow, let it snow...Keep up the good work!

By Pasty, New Zealand on Monday, November 6, 2000 - 09:52 pm:

Hi there guys, my name is Pasty. I got the nickname because I once ate 17 pasties in one sitting! I love pasties, and if I could I would only eat pasties. They are so delicious.
Well, bye for now!!!!!

By Betty, Texas on Monday, November 6, 2000 - 07:41 pm:

"The Branded Hand" is very interesting, Cheddar
John. We'll look forward to more items added
to your website. Thanks for letting us see
your work.

By CheddarJohn, Wisconsin on Monday, November 6, 2000 - 05:36 pm:

Check out the site I just created. It is about my great-great-great uncle, Jonathan Walker, who was branded in 1844 for trying to help seven slaves gain freedom. The URL is http://www.geocities.com/brandedhand/

Thank you

Has anyone in Yooper country (Calumet, Laurium, Keweenaw) ever heard of "The Hallelujah Diet?"

If not and you are curious, check out this url:
http://www.hacres.com.

Marilyn and I have been on it for over two years now. It renews one's immune system besides being very nutritious!

Paaiva!

By Cary Pelto on Sunday, November 5, 2000 - 03:22 pm:

I got your recipe for pasties from a newspaper out of Albuquerque NM. I have been making them for a couple of years now. I am a former UP resident. Thanks a million.

By CheddarJohn Wisconsin on Friday, November 3, 2000 - 02:29 pm:

Turkey pasties, anyone? Gobble, Gobble.

By Florida on Wednesday, November 1, 2000 - 09:21 am:

I'm curious. There are obvious connections between Pasty of New Zealand, Neil the baker in Cornwall and the group from the office in Cornwall or southeast England and the word pasty leading to finding Pasty Cam on the net. But, Trish is Australia, if you are still there and connecting, how did you find it?

By Lucy, TX on Wednesday, November 1, 2000 - 01:31 am:

I just had my first pasty in at least a couple years! It was wonderful (with a little butter and ketchup, by the way!). Thank you for making them available long distance! They arrived in fine shape and were well worth the wait and the price! My compliments to the cooks!
