What in the world is a pasty and/or a fudgy pastie?????? A few of us who are not from the U.P. are curious.

Almost 50 years have past since lightning struct the steeple of the old Methodist Church, Church Street and Calumet Avenue (US41). As a young child with family ties to this church (Jeffery and Archambeau) I can find little information about the event. I have some pictures of the event but would like personal reflections from those who remember either the old church or the fire. Besides personal desire for information, the Detroit Conference Board of History and Archives is also seeking memories. Your input is most welcome.

To Roger of St. Paul and William Jacka Sr., Your comments about the fire at Oak and Eighth street in Calumet brought back childhood memories for me. Mr. Charlie Ryan was my maternal Grandmother's brother (If my memory serves me). I remember visiting him at his home above Ryan's Funeral Home and seeing him in his wheelchair after losing his leg in that fire when the wall collapsed. I may be shakey on this, but I believe he had his other leg amputated later as a result of complications of diabetes. I check in on this web site frequently to bring back more pleasant memories of my childhood as well.

GREETINGS FROM MISAWA AIR BASE, JAPAN! I wanted to share the wonderful meal of pasties with some Japanese students I am teaching (English) and found your website. So I printed out the pictures for them to see. HMMM...I can smell the pasties through the website! LOL I REALLY need to make them at home here! I wouldn't imagine a shipment would be possible to Japan eh?
Love the website....signed, former Yooper Girl.
