Wanted to get one more tour of the U.P. in before the snow flies and sticks! We start just down the road from where our own Charlie Hopper lives, Eagle River. This tower was built by Elmo Negro. From what I hear, it's the second one he's had on the spot, the first one blew over with some of our strong U.P. winds. Elmo told me he built the tower for his family and friends to enjoy! It's on private property, so anyone thinking of venturing up there, should do the neighborly thing and check with Elmo first.

Talk about a bird's eye view,......I bet you can even see Charlie's house from up there!

Not quite, Mary, but it is an awesome view of the Lake and the Cliff range back toward Calumet.

We first featured Elmo's tower as he was building it back in September 1998, and when the first one fell in the windstorm the very next month.

Elmo
crash!

how high is the tower? what a view!!! is it used just for viewing? or some other function????

By Nancy on Monday, November 3, 2003 - 09:09 am:

I almost thought this was a lighthouse a first glance! Does it overlook the lake?

ahhh. the muted colors of November.......

By Sherry Chapman on Monday, November 3, 2003 - 10:23 am:

I'll have to look for this when I go up this summer. Is it just for viewing?

By Marsha, Genesee and Aura on Monday, November 3, 2003 - 10:54 am:

I've noticed this before and thought it was maybe a fire lookout.

Cool tower. I'm sure there is a great view from it. Has it been cold (or just cool)back there in the Yoop? We had a lot of rain last night here in Northern Ca. Sure was refreshing, and it has been rather cool here. A nice change from the 80's and 90's just a short week and a half ago. Good job on the photo posting Mary. Wish I could have seen the fall colors in person.

According to my Mom, Elmo's grandchildren camp out in the tower. I had the privledge of touring the tower in 1999.

A bit of a warning to any who think of venturing up to the tower...besides getting permission, watch out! Some of the possible routes up to the tower are risky at best! We went up the face in 2000 (with permission) and though there is a wire "rail" rigged we had a most challenging climb! The view IS grand however and others have told us there are much easier routes. I would love to get back up there, but don't know now how to achieve permission as our past connection has moved on.

How about views (may 360) from the tower?

By Missin the UP from NJ on Monday, November 3, 2003 - 05:48 pm:

That tower is just too cool for words! It would be great if someone got some pictures from that tower. Maybe Elmo has one that you could borrow to post.
I just love this site! Always something interesting. Thanx again.

Hats off to Elmo.
building a tower just a short walk from his old grade school.
I believe there was a wedding at the tower in
2001.

To UPgal: down here in Troll land we are to have temps in the low 70's tomorrow (Metro Detroit area). All this talk about snow! snow! snow! on the UP web sites. And I worry that the temps might be too warm tomorrow!!! What a contrast.

Years ago when that was C&H land, I went exploring around the mine that is just below the tower. Done with the mine, I climbed up the rock outcrop. About half way up, I found a flat spot and a great patch of blueberries. Picked same and brought them down to the lighthouse in Eagle River where my Grandmother converted them into two pies. Hope Elmo and his family have been enjoying that spot!

I think that Classmates.com is the "one". I had three serious girlfriends from almost 30 years ago from high school, college, and the service all contact me over the last two years and I have been married to the same gal for 26 years. I am considering the Witness Protection Program. I have deleted all info from Classmates.com....

Snowed on and off in Cornell today but less than 1" accumulated. 'Bout the same in Negaunee earlier tonight when we went up for our Suomen luokka. (Finnish class) Roads just wet, not freezing as we came through.

Not to worry, Mystery Man, I'm sure they aren't intent on stealing you away from your wife. They just want to see if their old BF turned into an old coot, or not!

By Yoopergearle, MI on Friday, November 7, 2003 - 12:02 pm:

Hey Mystery Man, you must be quite the catch to have three ladies checking into your status. We all should be so lucky as the Mrs.

By Zachary, Washington State on Thursday, April 7, 2005 - 06:36 pm:

I was doing a random search of names when I came across my greatuncle Elmo Negro. I've never seen the tower until now but I've heard a lot about it from my grandma Margarita Negro. I hope one day we will be able to meet agian. It has been too long.
