The Pasty Cam Guest Gallery of U.P. photos is growing so fast now I can hardly keep up with it. Laura Ann Kowalczyk of White Plains Maryland has included some shots of the Soo Locks, where the big boats get elevated to some 600+ feet above sea level to the surface of Lake Superior.

Speaking of sea level, I crossed a bit of it from New Zealand's North Island, an area of water known as 'Cook Strait'. The 2 hour ride was a bit choppy, but I'm sure not as choppy as the folks are having along the east coast of the United States, where I hear hurricane Floyd is flexing his muscles. Batten down the hatches!

Sounds like an "UP" Ramp to me!

By JBM ..Warren Mi. on Thursday, September 18, 2003 - 07:00 am:

I can spend hours here, just watching the boats go by.

By Deb Canton, MI on Thursday, September 18, 2003 - 07:51 am:

Floyd?? you're a few behind Toivo....it's ISABEL

Granted that the pasty is the national food of Yoop, the cheeseburger must come in a close second. And if you look at this picture, and follow the street along the lock, under the bridge approaches, you'll eventually come to the West Pier Diner. They have a double cheeseburger that'll upend your food pyramid for all time. I don't know the coloric content, and don't want to know, but anyone visiting the Soo should indulge in one of their cheeseburgers at least once...then spend the rest of your time exercising to work it off.

Richard,Indiana- Sounds like a cheeseburger in Paradise.

Another cool place to eat is Atlers. I don't know the name of the street its on but ask any store shop worker and they can tell you because thats how we found out about the place. It doesn't look like much on the outside but inside-- Wow! Every kind of animal head is displayed in every room. There is a gift shop downstairs. A must see if you are in the Soo.

I knew New Zeeland was in a different day and time but not the year. Hurricane floyd was several years ago. ;-)

By Drew, MN on Thursday, September 18, 2003 - 10:18 am:

Yes, I believe Floyd was in 1999 - Toivo must have had one too many New Zealand cocktails with his pasty. CrAzY!!

I don't know about the west pier diner but thirty years ago when I went to LSSC there was the best sub shop down past the west side of the International Bridge.

By Ms. Katie on Thursday, September 18, 2003 - 02:01 pm:

The resturant Atlers has lots more than animal trophys hangin around. But be warned...when the whistle or horn goes of...watch all the crazy action that ensues! The grandkids loved it.

By Helen, MI on Thursday, September 18, 2003 - 03:22 pm:

HEY TOIVO!! IT'S NOT A MAN, IT'S A WOMAN AND HER NAME IS "ISABEL"!! YOU MUST REALLY BE WAY UNDER!!!! BETTER HURRY AND COME ON BACK UP HERE!!!!

By rwestwood, Rose Hill, KS on Thursday, September 18, 2003 - 03:36 pm:

Hey gang, it's Antlers and they're located at 804 E. Portage Ave.

By Troll, MI on Thursday, September 18, 2003 - 04:18 pm:

Also when you are at the Soo, be sure to check out the Valley Camp freighter museum. Another must see. Then go to "ANTLERS" for lunch or dinner and see MORE than animal heads, whistles and bells....there, hope I covered it all.

Re-read the entries of two years ago these days. Think it's good to be able to read what people thought back then as a reminder - to me, especially the comments on hate and love.
One question, though: what does "pc2002" mean?

By Rick, Ohio on Thursday, September 18, 2003 - 05:02 pm:

I've been to Australia (Melbourne area) a couple times and
was a bit surprised to find they also had Pasties. Tried
them and they are pretty much just like the UP's. Have you
seen any Pasties in New Zeland?
In hindsight I probably shouldn't have been surprised given
the history of Australia (british and a lot of mines).

By A Yooper in Kansas on Thursday, September 18, 2003 - 05:58 pm:

Hello,
This is so strange because I live in the SAME town as rwestwood. I live in Rose Hill too!
Did you ever live in the UP rwestwood?

By Patt, Durand, MI on Thursday, September 18, 2003 - 06:23 pm:

If the boats are raised about 27 feet from Lake Huron to Lake Superior, where do they get raised the other 500+ feet from sea level?

By Ned, Kingsford. on Thursday, September 18, 2003 - 09:13 pm:

The ships are raised from sea level to Lake Superior through the natural act of coming upstream through the St Lawrence, Detroit, St Claire, and St Mary's Rivers and also by coming thru the Welland Canal locks which bypass Niagara Falls. It all adds up to the difference in elevation between the Atlantic Ocean and Lake Superior. Are there also locks on the St Lawrence River?

By yooperwannabe/IN on Thursday, September 18, 2003 - 09:44 pm:

You'd have to head west an hour or so to get a true cheseburger in Paradise.

PC2002= pasty calendar 2002 a nomination for.

By Troll. Lower MI on Friday, September 19, 2003 - 08:23 am:

Z-Man:
Thanks for clearing up what PC2002 stood for. As a new comer to the sight, I too was a bit baffled as to what it stood for.

By Marg, Houghton MI on Friday, September 19, 2003 - 03:29 pm:

Hey when you go to the West Pier in the Sault you have to try the Subs as well, I have been eating them since 1966 and I use to toss them across the fence to my brother who worked for USS corporation on several ship's including the Arthur M. Anderson the night the Edmund Fitzgerald went down. So try one of the mixed or turkey subs they are great and a lot different than Sub Way. They also use to make a double double burger, which had double meat and double cheese. So try one you can't eat it all!

By dt on Friday, September 19, 2003 - 05:22 pm:

yes there are locks in the seaway
