Charlie, east of Munising on Monday, August 25, 2003 - 09:38 am:

Tricia Oleksy has a pleasant slide show in the guest gallery, which includes these two lovely ladies - a minute vacation for those who would like to feel the sand between their toes one more time before vacation season is over.

I woke up this morning in Munising, after a quick trip downstate, hoping to see today's shot. Apparently Toivo is taking a long weekend. Perhaps he was a week ahead and thought it was Labor Day. That's next Monday, Mr. Toivo. Are you gonna make it back to the U.P. in time for the bridge walk?

Looks like a beautiful morning for a drive up to the Copper Country.

This is one of the Kodak Moments photographers look for.

What a great slideshow. Great waay to start the day :)

Hey, Can someone tell me the name(s) of cell phone providers in the U.P.

By Mary Drew on Monday, August 25, 2003 - 10:15 am:

Don't worry about coverage for the Labor Day Bridge walk, Charlie, yours truly will be there!

By Missin the UP from NJ on Monday, August 25, 2003 - 11:26 am:

What a great shot! And such cutie pies!
What kind of camera is required to take pictures like this? (I still haven't bought a digital camera) It feels like I could walk into the picture and wave to the kids and walk right down the beach! Can I take pics this great with a moderately priced camera? What megapixel do I need?
Thanx for any info as I'll be in the UP in Sept. Would love to attempt to post pictures of my beautiful Yoop.

The innocense of youth and the beauty of Superoir. Hard combination to beat. Warms a persons heart.

By John, MI on Monday, August 25, 2003 - 12:50 pm:

Does anyone know of any pasty shops in the Seattle/Tacoma area? My brother-in-law would be eternally grateful if anyone knows of one out there.

By Dave Cloutier - Colorado on Monday, August 25, 2003 - 01:06 pm:

Missin the UP:
If you get a digital camera that takes at least 3.0 megapixel pictures you can take very nice photographs. There are a number of cameras that can do this for less than $300.00.

A friend of mine just bought a Nikon CoolPix 4300 camera for around $350. It takes 4.0 megapixel photographs and is very easy to learn to use, but it is small enough to easily carry it in your pocket. It has a lot of pre-programed options.

If you are willing to spend a bit more, the Pentax Visio 550 is outstanding! It takes 5.0 megapixel photographs, has a 5x optical zoom and a wide variety of pre-programed settings. It has the best battery life around and is available for around $550. Good luck and have fun...

By Alanna, MTU on Monday, August 25, 2003 - 01:19 pm:

I wish I could be them, not having to worry about going to class or doing homework. It's only the first day here and I already have a paper and tons of math problems to do. Oh well, at least I can still go out to the shore once my homework is done.

By Missin the UP from NJ on Monday, August 25, 2003 - 01:48 pm:

To Dave Cloutier-CO,

Thanx so much, it means a lot to have someone give limited suggestions with some explanations. It's just been too overwhelming to look at all the cameras offered in all the flyers we get in our Sunday papers. Now I can go shopping and be able to zero in on a camera. AND ingnore those (Starbucks) hyper sales people!

To Alanna, MTU,

How lucky you are to have the "carrot" of spending time on the Superior shore there to keep you doing your homework. I bet you'll remember those quiet reflective times by the water for the rest of your life. Best of luck in your studies!

By Patt, Howell, MI on Monday, August 25, 2003 - 01:55 pm:

I know we usually reserve the last day of the month for our dearly departed but today looks like my beloved pet of 14 years will be taking her last breath. Scruffy loved to play on the beaches of Huron & Superior. She loved to try and pick up rocks that were twice her weight and carry them along those majestic shorelines and then bury them in the sand. I will forever remember her antics everyime I view those shorelines. Thanks for allowing me this time to remember her.

By Missin the UP from NJ on Monday, August 25, 2003 - 02:21 pm:

I have to post one more time today,

To Patt, Howell, MI
My sympathy on the loss of your dear Scruffy. Many of us understand that very special connection that's possible with certain pets. You were lucky to have that. The older I get the deeper my understanding of just how valuable and BIG is the love of a special pet. We are the richer for it.

By Tricia Oleksy, OH on Monday, August 25, 2003 - 02:45 pm:

Thank you all for your compliments. We had a great family vacation UP there this year, all 14 of us!!

I took these shots with my regular film camera. Just scanned them in & uploaded.

Patt, I agree with "Missin", it's great to have the love of pets. Sorry to hear the loss of yours. I'm sure you'll remember the great times.

By Jim B-Downtown Milwaukee on Monday, August 25, 2003 - 02:47 pm:

What a priceless picture of the girls.Everything seems so quiet and serene! Its certainly not that way here in Milwaukee.Harley Davidson is celebrating its 100th B-Day.The downtown area is loading up with Harley riders from all over the world.Over 200,000 are expected to be here by the weekend. The Harbors (Eagle & Copper)seem so far away!!!

Thanks for all the advice regarding cameras!!!

By Sandy UP on Monday, August 25, 2003 - 02:47 pm:

Mike B, Pittsburg: Alltel and Cellularone both provide cell phone service in the UP. I'm not certain if there are any other providers, but those are the two that I'm familiar with in the Copper Country.

By DCC - Colorado on Monday, August 25, 2003 - 03:19 pm:

To Missin:
Correction! Sorry but the Pentax camera I mentioned above is the Optio 550 (not Visio). Right now it packs the most power int the smallest package. Here is a link to information about it.

http://www1.dealtime.com/xPO-Pentax_Optio_550

I bought one a couple weeks ago. (and still can't seem to remember the model name) The pictures of New England in my gallery were taken with one of these cameras and I used the "medium" resolution. When set to "high" they are even sharper!

Hey Trish,
I don't think you told the whole truth...
I think "Mosquito Bump" and her sister(our neices)were plotting to smuggle Bete De Gris back to Ohio......

By EM,MI on Monday, August 25, 2003 - 03:42 pm:

Beautiful Girls! Enjoy them to the fullest each and every day. All too soon they will be all grown up.

By Connie - Colorado on Monday, August 25, 2003 - 03:44 pm:

Patt,
I'm sorry to hear about your dog. When our dog died, my husband made her a little gravestone with a wooden frame and a bag of concrete. We wrote her name, DoB, DoD etc on it and some sentiments and I treasure that very much. Maxine will always be our baby. I hope your grief passes peacefully. Somewhere a dog in a shelter is hoping you will be thinking of them when the time comes!

By Mary, Madison WI on Monday, August 25, 2003 - 04:28 pm:

Thanks Tricia!!! I love the photos of Brunette Park -- my favorite beach in the midwest. Just returned from UP 10 days ago and miss it already.

By Jean Oleksy,OH on Monday, August 25, 2003 - 04:34 pm:

Way to go Stosh!
Just remembering the lovely warm days on the beach helps when the "everyday" life has to start over! Love ya!

By Janie, Ia. on Monday, August 25, 2003 - 05:08 pm:

To Pat in Howell: I share your broken heart!!! Last year we said goodbye to our 13 yr. old Scottish Terrier, Otis, and now last week we said goodbye to our 27yr.old Quarter Horse mare,Katy. I have had Katy since she was a 6yr.old, my husband stayed home last monday while I went to work and met with our vet, and took care of the grave work. Sometimes it is hard to do the kind thing to our loveable pets!

There used to be a Pasty shop on the East Hill in Kent. I don't know if it is still there but he could check there and see. It was run by some people from around the Rock area.

By Greta, Milwaukee on Monday, August 25, 2003 - 06:41 pm:

To Jim B, Downtown Milw - from Greta working in "downtown" Wauwatosa: I'm happy for all the Harley business etc - but I'm heading for the Yoop on Wednesday for my own celebration of wind-in-the-hair freedom!

By Anon for obvious reasons on Monday, August 25, 2003 - 07:39 pm:

My wife and I run a 60 year old animal shelter in the inner city of Detroit. We service almost 10,000 animals per year. When we married 26 years ago, we each had two cats. Since then we have had many more. We "home buried" two of our cats at our last house 15 years ago in very nice kitty coffins. When we sold that house and moved, my wife informed me that she was not leaving her cats. I asked her what that meant, although I already knew. I "retrieved" those cats, cremated them, and from now on, all of our animals are cremated so that when and if we move, our animals go with us. I don't ever want to spend a Sunday afternoon like I did about 15 years ago.

By Janie, Ia. on Monday, August 25, 2003 - 08:04 pm:

Anon: Both you and my husband are good-hearted souls!! We too cremate our dogs but, Katy the horse, she had to be buried in our pasture.

See pictures on June 20. I understand Angus is still in business in Seattle.

Thanks to one & all with sharing your own animal stories on this most difficult day. Sorry to drag the rest of you down too. Hopefully tomorrow's board will be filled with good cheer for everyone.
