Wonder where Toivo was last night?... I thought he would report in from Salt Lake City this morning, and put on the Saturday Cam. Nothing from him in my email. Wonder if he had computer trouble? or (more likely) car trouble?

What exactly is Trenary Toast? I typed this note yesterday and must have forgotten to send it! Where can I get it when I'm at our cottage this summer north of L'anse?

What kinda tracks are all over the beach there?

Nice river pics. Reminds me of our camp site on the Traprock River outside of Lake Linden. Can't wait to get back up there again.

Trenary Toast: in response to Marsha, Genesee,

Marsha, Trenary Toast is a long time staple of many good coffee breaks taken around kitchen tables throughout the UP every day. It is a hard cinnamon and sugar toast that comes out of the Trenary Bakery, in Trenary Mich. Just go to any good old UP grcery store near or around L'anse and then should have it. If not, head towards Ontonagon county and vist any of the small owner operated grocery stores and just ask for it by name. Elm's market in Mass City stocks up pretty well and I beleive there is a Elm's store in Baraga. Sometime you can find in Ontonagon, but I was just up there on vacation in Feb and they were all out of Trenary, they had some kind of other brand...but the Trenary is what we grew up on and is the best, accept no substitutions. The older folks like it with butter and dunking it in coffee the younger folks like it with peanut butter and dunking in hot choclate. The "dunking" is very important as the toast is hard and you pretty much have to dunk and bite, but once you do, you are pretty much hooked. I think pasty central or one of the UP places (maybe da yoopers)used to actually send it out in their gift baskets. We call it Finnlander Wedding cake in some parts of the UP as kind of a inside joke. Hope that helps.

I just got back with my bags of Trenary Toast from Holiday Market east of the Detroit Zoo,on Main St.in Royal Oak, MI.I left afew bags on the shelf if you other displaced Yoopers in this area want some eh.

I have a favorite Trenary Toast memory to share with you:

Back when I was about 10 years old, my parents let me have a puppy. I remember driving out to some farm in Traprock Valley with my dad and picking a puppy from a litter of 5 or 6. A cute black mixed-breed pup which we referred to as being a shepherd. I named him Ringo. (yeah, it was the early sixties). Well, anyway, you know how puppies love to chew on anything and everything; I think it drove my mom crazy. One morning my mom broke a piece of Trenary Toast in half and gave one to Ringo. Well that little dog was in heaven! and every morning from that time on, while I'd be having breakfast before going off to school, I'd watch little Ringo gnaw on that chunk of korpuu like it was a juicy bone!

But, almost as amusing as seeing how much Ringo loved Trenary Toast, was that one morning when Ringo was almost out of puppyhood, or through "teething", or whatever... he took the piece of Trenary Toast from my mom and dropped it. I mean, he just was no longer interested. He licked it a little and just let it lie on the floor... 'til finally one of us picked it up an tossed it in the trash.

All in our family thought this was such an odd little tale... I mean, to this day I can't figure out how anyone--even a dog--could give up korpuu!

Well, all the more for the rest of us.

Dave/YTBAY: Yeah, sure could go for some "korpuus" about now after what we've been thru here. Southeast Michigan/April and couple inches of new snow and ice, bitter cold. What the hey? No one played the "Heiki Lunta" song here! All the rest of our tall trees have broken, come down and ruined our TV & CB antennas, smashed all my birdfeeders & houses,and smashed my beautiful poor mans SUV! It looks like downtown Baghdad here! What a way to get firewood!
By the way Trenary toast is excellent but I do remember and liked the old "Star"toast! And I think I remember the old "Watkins" man that used to come around Dollar Bay & Woodside when I lived there as a boy -- so long ago!

Yes, I am related to the Cloutiers in Lake Linden. I grew up in the Detroit area and went to NMU with Sara Cloutier, of Lake Linden, in the late 1970's. If I understand our relations correctly, our Sara and I had the same great-Grandfather, John Cloutier. We also have a relative named Charboneau who's brother is the guy that was on the Lewis and Clark Expedition!

Cloutier is a bit of a rare name.... and I heard that it is also spelled Clouthier as someone pointed out. When I moved to Colorado after college, I learned of another family of Cloutiers in Denver, but as far as I know we are not related.

A while back friend of mine was travelling through Louisiana and passed through a little town named "Cloutierville"... They even had a sign along the highway for the exit... and if I ever go there myself I may have to steal that sign for my cabin wall... :) If you see Sara, please give her my regards... Take care...

Yes, I know the Cassette's from Lake Linden. Alice (Cassette) Makinen was the Principal's Secretary at LLHHS for years. I knew her brother Ed and I know her sister Virginia, she was my Campfire Girl leader in the 60's! Alice's grandson is one of my son's friends! Small world!

Happened to find this site. I have tears in my eyes listening to the wonderful things about my family's bakery. My folks, Hans and Esther Hallinen, have passed on, but they loved the bakery and the Toast more than you can know. Now my brother runs things. We grew up on top of the bakery, and we smelled and breathed in the cinnammon every day. As I travel the country, I always carry a bag of toast, so my children with have some every day just like we did as kids. Thanks everyone for making my day.
