By Karla at Evert's Snowmobile Rentals, Hancock, MI on Tuesday, February 4, 2003 - 09:41 am: We had to pick up a damaged sled at Lac La Belle yesterday and took these pics amongst 65 others. The pic of Lake Superior is across the sand dunes between Eagle Harbor and Eagle River. I think that the Keweenaw County Courthouse is as majestic as the trees protecting it. For a closer look at local conditions, especially along the snowmobile trails, check out Karla's Trail Report. ![]() By Dave M., Lansing on Tuesday, February 4, 2003 - 10:12 am: Well, speaking for myself and I am unanimous in that, it's kinda nice to be looking at snow rather than frozen slush. Hey Karla, By Steve, IL on Tuesday, February 4, 2003 - 10:51 am: That's not Nessie. That's Keewie, Nessie's Lake Superior cousin. By pegg, fla on Tuesday, February 4, 2003 - 10:51 am: Is that the Lake Superior monster, Suppie, cousin to Nessie, poking it's head up through the ice to right of middle in the second pic? By BCT Mi on Tuesday, February 4, 2003 - 11:07 am: How 'bout keweenessie? Wondering where the water went. By Jean, Devon, England on Tuesday, February 4, 2003 - 11:14 am: I reckon it is Nessie on holiday, and this is why we haven't heard of any sightings on Loch Ness lately!!! He will return to these shores just before the tourist season starts. By buried in MI on Tuesday, February 4, 2003 - 11:16 am: I tink ders a big family of dem up here...Keewie lives in da Keewenaw County part of Superior and Suppie lives in da Houghton County part of da lake, eh? By Alice, CA on Tuesday, February 4, 2003 - 11:27 am: Where is the house that Sheriff Ron and his son are playing ball in front of in the first picture? Was it taken down? Alice - - By kb.laurium on Tuesday, February 4, 2003 - 12:12 pm: my husband and i took the "keewenaw cruise" sunday.it was quite nice sunday but the roads were slushy so we stopped at the sand dunes to give the windows the copper country washing.you know, when you throw snowballs at the window and turn on your wipers!i had to chuckle thinking of how many of us do this without thinking twice.where and who started this anyway?are we taught or told to do this or is it copper country instinct? By jack, coeur d alene, id on Tuesday, February 4, 2003 - 12:15 pm: more like the "loch neimi" monster By Thad, Troll Land, MI on Tuesday, February 4, 2003 - 12:17 pm: Monsters in the da-Up. I think the cold is getting to some of you.. ey! By Tammy Longpre on Tuesday, February 4, 2003 - 01:00 pm:
Heya "Cousin Dave"! :) By Joe, Aurora, IL on Tuesday, February 4, 2003 - 01:56 pm: I can certainly verify the snow and high wind reports. I arrived here Saturday at the Eagle Lodge on the northern shore just west of Copper Harbor and we're snowed in. I've been helping plow/shovel the snow with the owner Doug Johnson and now it's time for a fire and some more coffee. We'll be at it again later I'm sure. I had intended to head south this a.m. but I'm stuck at least until tomorrow. The waves on Lake Superior are huge today. They've eroded the snow volcanoes that were along the shore yesterday. Wish me luck for tomorrow. By michigan on Tuesday, February 4, 2003 - 03:24 pm: hello, we are in sunny florida its very warm here today its good to see some old upper weather take care see you in april By Susie B, FL on Tuesday, February 4, 2003 - 03:55 pm: Karla, Thank you for giving me a view from home...That picture of the Court House must have been taken almost in front of the house I grew up in, and where my parents still live. Brings back lots of good memories! By Charlie and Edie, Eagle River, MI on Tuesday, February 4, 2003 - 04:13 pm: Hi Susie! We were just talking about you the other night, remembering your patience when the kids were taking piano lessons. Seems like ages ago, now that they're both married and living in places of their own. Jonathan and Katriina bought George Rosengana's old house here in Eagle River, working full time for Pasty.NET, and Becky and Bryan live in married housing at Michigan Tech, where she answers the pasty phone and processes orders all day. Bryan had some neat winter camping shots on the Pasty Cam last week. By W.H.T. New Jersey on Tuesday, February 4, 2003 - 04:20 pm:

Steve Tuttle on Tuesday, February 4, 2003 - 09:40 pm: Received your pasties. Ate your pasties.(With gusto) Even my wife, whose five least favorite words in the universe include, "bait, tackle, well, septic, and propane" loved them. This is a very special site and we look forward to supporting you in any way possible. Please thank the lovely folks at Still Waters who assist in pasty prep. We appreciate and thank them.... The big fish: Orkilla the Killer Trout! By Alice, CA on Wednesday, February 5, 2003 - 02:49 am: Thanks Toivo. I thought that must be the case, but I couldn't figure out what the angle was. By Karla Korpela, Hancock, MI on Wednesday, February 5, 2003 - 11:42 am:
I'm glad everyone liked the pictures. I didn't see what you did until I read the messages. I'm not a good photographer and am always surprised when Charlie decides to put them on. Also, I just love the way the flag peeks out among the tree branches in front of the Courthouse. I guess I was compelled to take that picture because it is such a solid reminder of the building of America and the wonder that it has lasted for so many years, and hasn't been torn down, or modified to make way for new construction. When we drove by I just got a feeling I can't explain. By Paul Koski, CA on Wednesday, February 5, 2003 - 04:33 pm:
Karla: By Nancy Nelson on Thursday, February 6, 2003 - 10:15 pm: Sorry, that wasn't Soopy in the shot above. I spotted him feeding just off Esrey Park last August. ![]() By Karla Korpela, Hancock, MI on Friday, February 7, 2003 - 10:22 pm: By Ron Kentala, Michigan on Saturday, February 8, 2003 - 07:07 pm: To Luanne: That wouldn't happen to be the Reed Harjala who played in a band back in the early 60's called "Headchoppers Ltd." would it? I remember Reed played guitar, Larry Gariepy played drums. Can't recal who the bass player was. I used to hang around with Larry's brother Jimmy. If I'm not mistaken, Reed even made his own guitar. He wouldn't know me, I was a young punk of a kid, maybe 9 or 10 years old. If you see him, ask him about this. Thanks. By Luanne, Dickeyville,WI on Sunday, February 9, 2003 - 06:27 pm: To Ron: I don't know if it is the one and same Reed Harjala. He is a Calumet area boy, older than me by a few years, but I would be too young to know the Headchoppers. Someone around must know the answer, but as I don't live in the area at this time I can't ask him. The Reed I know of, played with Gary Sastominen, Scott Perkins, and Roger Laub in Dodge Street in the 70's. Nowadays, Reed often performs in Fat Chance. Hope someone can answer this for you. |
