Hello to all the Cousin Jacks and Cousin Jennies of this strange outerworld. I live in North Florida near Tallahassee and lost my house in Miami area in 1992 to Hurrican Andrew so we moved north rather than rebuild there . My father was born in St.Ives Cornwall and my mother's parents were also. They immigrated to the USA in 1875 to the Copper Country and begat seven sons and two daughters. My mother, Jessie White, was the last born and she married my father who came over in 1909 Sydney Harvey Beare. He was born at #1 Fish Street on the wharf at St. Ives. His grandfather was William German Stevens, the first registered TRINITY pilot for the St. Ives harbour and estuary. Anyway; my mothers family , the Whites, were mostly miners at the old C & H Mine in Calumet so if anyone outthere knows of the Whites in the Copper Harbour area would sure like to communicate with them. I'm sure enjoying your site and look forward to maybe talking with some relatives. Thanks.

Hello all! I love all the fall pictures being featured. It is still pretty green down this way. It seems like we are going to have late fall color here, that is if the leaves last on the trees long enough. Seems like when this happens some nasty wind/rain storm takes most of them off before the color change. OH well.....Anyway, I would love to see a fall picture from Lake of the Clouds or general area. Anyone have one from both the scenic lookout and down by the lake? That would make a great duo picture.
I love this site! Keep up the great work!!
Best wishes,
Renee from IL

Just glancing through the pasty condiment debate, I didn't see my favorite. Many, MANY years ago, Isabelle Hagen of Houghton, MI introduced me to applesauce on pasties. Try it, you'll like it!

Hey Yous Guys,
my name is Kristin and I live in Colorado. however, as a child I lived in Door county wisconsin. I am sorry to disappoint you but I have no comments about pasties. I am looking for a site where I can order an album by Da Yoopers. Please email me if any of ya know where I can get one. Thanks a bunch and keep your stick on the ice.

By CheddarJohn on Tuesday, September 26, 2000 - 10:13 am:

A Yooper detective who spent his entire career in plain clothes quit the police force and bought a farm.

"What kind of crops do you plan to grow?" the police chief asked the farmer-to-be.

"Carrots and potatoes," the man replied.

"Why carrots and potatoes?" asked the chief.

"Because," answered the ex-detective, . . . "I'm very fond of undercover crops."

Must be a pasty lover, eh?!

Hello,
EveyOne

I have read all the e.mail about pasties, and how they should be eaten. It really doesn't matter how you eat them it's the taste that matter, sure pasties should taste great with out adding any thing to them. But some of us like our gravy, mustard, ketcup, and etc. Don't get me wrong all your Ideals are great. My husband can eat them with anything. please keep up the good job.
P.S. I love your website Smile

I tried to make it up to the Keweenaw Penn. this year but only made it as far as Cedarville. It's such a magical feeling when you cross bridge, everything gets clearer and fresher. I was born in Hancock and pretty much spent my childhood there. Now I'm a loper. I miss the winters actually, there was SO MUCH to do!! We moved to New Hampshire when I was in the ninth grade and I didn't get to graduate from HCH but would have been the class of 86 if anyone out there reads this send me a note!!
This is the best website out there. Thank you for bringing my back home every week!!!

Dear Steve Ristola..Minnesota I just returned from two weeks in the U.P., there is about 25% color, more in spots. With all of the forecasted cold weather this week I am sure you are in for a great color show. One word of advice don't forget the warm outerware hats and gloves for sure. Have a great time. Jean

Sometime ago I found some copper outlet and switchplate covers on this site. I believe it was CopperWorks (?). Charlie our awesome webmaster tried to help me out but the number was disconnected. Does anyone know where to get the covers, plain, old looking, not shiny or fired? Anyone in the Copper Country still making something like that? I'd appreciate any help all you yoopers can give me. Thanks!! Sally

What is the fat content, etc in a meat pasty? Please email me asap so I can try these pasties, please. I can only have certain foods because of health reasons and sure have heard a lot about them. WHat is the nutritional value?

By Dawn J., Washington on Sunday, September 17, 2000 - 12:19 pm:

Just returned home (Seattle) from the U.P. and had to get right on and order another batch of pasties. Unfortunately, my visit was for my grandmother's (Evelyn Greenleaf of Dollar Bay) funeral. Kisses to all of my family still residing up there! Oh, my vote is for a little bit of ketchup, just always been done that way.

By Connie Rowe Ft. Riley, KS on Thursday, September 14, 2000 - 11:43 pm:

Hello,
I am originally from Laurium and am constantly on your site checking out the pictures. It helps when I'm missing the good old U.P. Keep up the good work. We have a friend here who is a huge George Gipp fan, his license plate and e-mail address have Gipper on them! Have there been any pictures of the George Gipp Memorial Park in Laurium on the pasty-cam? I will be up for a visit next month and am looking forward to the cool, crisp air!
Connie

Hello From Wellingborough (UK)

We work in a small office here in Wellingborough and are lucky enough to have a canteen that makes some of the best pasties this side of Cornwall. We checked out your site and were salivating at the thought of ordering (and more importantly eating) one / some of your pasties. But OHHHHhhh Noooo, you only service the US!!!

Any chance of a *Special* order.

All Best

The Boys in NRGCSS

Dear Boys: Please stop in and see us next time you are in the States. (Corner of Mine and Elm in Calumet). Also, a growing number of restaurants and outlets in the U.P. are beginning to carry Pasty Central pasties. Some are listed on the order form

Maybe one of these days we'll find a safe and dependable way to ship overseas :o)

I am also having trouble with the reunion/vacation photo link. I'm looking forward to seeing it once it's up and running. I had to get my UP fix through your website this summer. Sadly, no time for a visit this year.

By Tricia, Ohio on Monday, September 11, 2000 - 08:27 am:

Hi,

Would like to see the collection of reunion/vacation photos, but the link doesn't seem to work. It's underlined like a link, but no action.

Hi from Arizona.
Still hot here. (105 today)Maybe it will cool down to the 80's by the end of October.I grew up in Kearsarge and really miss the U.P. All the pictures sure help out alot.Hope to be back again soon for a visit.

By Florida on Saturday, September 9, 2000 - 09:40 am:

Hi,
Florida here again. We are still in the hot(90s) humid rainy season. How I envy those of you in the U.P. right now. Of course when January and February roll around I don't have any such feelings. Still love the Copper Country but the snow I love is that I see in pictures.
Sure do miss the fall colors. This is the first year we've been stuck here all summer so will be our first year without fall color.

By Renee in IL on Saturday, September 9, 2000 - 02:39 am:

Hello all! Just wondering if the fall colors have started to appear yet in the UP? Or is it still too early? We usually don't hit peak color down here until around Oct. 10. Wish I was up there to see the peak colors. I bet Lake Of The Clouds looks really beautiful then!! Not that it doesn't look beautiful at other times but just more so with all those firey fall colors around!
Best wishes,
Renee in IL

By Margaret Dyni Byar on Friday, September 8, 2000 - 03:56 pm:

My vote is for catsup on pasties. When my Grandmother, who made the best pasties I've ever eaten before or since, passed away in the mid 70,s there was one pasty that she made in my mothers (Jeanne Dyni's) freezer. She was the best example of a loving mother, she let me have that pasty. That was the best pasty ever.I make them all the time for my family but there definately not like grandmas.

To Janet Mikkola Rosenberg:
I just got back from Toivola. We are probably related. Please e-mail me at skotajar@aol.com

I'm related to the Hayrynen family which just had a big family party at Twin Lakes.

I would like to hear from you.

By Janet Mikkola Rosenberg, NY on Monday, September 4, 2000 - 07:06 pm:

I recently discovered your wonderful website. I grew up in Toivola, not far from Agate Beach, and get quite nostalgic when I view your photos. I now live in New York City and at my farm in upstate New York, but a large portion of my heart will always be in the U.P. I'd love to see some shots of Toivola and Agate Beach!

Regards,
Janet Mikkola Rosenberg

By Lisa, Ypsilanti, MI on Monday, September 4, 2000 - 01:48 pm:

I must agree with Les. A good pasty can stand on its own! Hold the ketchup, gravy, and everything else.
Hey, if the Virginia Pietila who makes the pasties is Alice's sister, tell her Betty's daughter Lisa says hi!!

By JB, Caledonia, MI on Monday, September 4, 2000 - 10:00 am:

I like to moisten my pasties by slicing a small hole in the top and putting a tablespoon (or 2) of water inside. Close it and bake it! It makes a difference. Any comments?

By Denise W on Monday, September 4, 2000 - 07:41 am:

How happy I was to find your site!

My parents live in Toivola, in my mother's home place, in the beautiful U.P. and I am a great fan of the area, as well as pasty day at the Lunchroom.

Reading these letters make me want to go home and partake, once again of those wonderful regional delights!

What a treat to bump into mention of my Aunt Jingo, as well!

Have a wonderful day!

Kittos,
Denise Wiitala

By Tom Line in Milwaukee, WI on Sunday, September 3, 2000 - 06:23 pm:

Greetings again; I just wanted to add my e-mail address so that Chuck Hoyer (or any others such as HCH graduates) can contact me via the internet.

By the way, I have tried repeatedly to get the Bridge Cam and keep getting the same frame, ie.
9/3/00 7:48 PM. Is it the Bridge Cam or is it I?

I love this web site! My e-mail is TLineSarmy@aol.com.

By Tom Line, Milwaukee, WI on Sunday, September 3, 2000 - 04:06 pm:

Pasties are best with a little bit of catsup and butter! No gravy or mustard for me! My wife, Sandy, taught my mother-in-law how to make pasties. But one day she was going to surprise us and make pasties herself...well we were really surprised when we bit in and found she had put in peas and carrots instead of rutabaga! Another time she put in ground sausage instead of beef!

Good to see my sister, Ellen, from Florida and my niece, Lucy, from Texas leaving their messages on this board. Heva paivaa!!

By the way, is the Chuck Hoyer that has been on the board lately with "Grandma's Pasty Shop" at the Minnesota State Fair the same Chuck Hoyer I graduated with from Hancock in 1961? It would be great to hear from you, Chuck!

We love and miss the Copper Country so much ... at least we get to visit! God bless you all.

By Les Bammert, Buffalo, N.Y. Formerly of Ahmeek. on Sunday, September 3, 2000 - 09:27 am:

Gravy? Catsup? Mustard? Mayonaise? A good pasty should be eaten "au naturel". Any of the afore mentioned condiments only mask the flavor of the pasty and is an insult to the pasty maker.

By Ellen, Florida on Saturday, September 2, 2000 - 12:34 am:

Catsup on pasties gets my vote! I served tiny little mini pasties at my daughter's baby shower and kept telling everyone to put a little catsup on them, and finally my daughters said, "Okay, Mom, we get it!" I'm surprised my husband doesn't put Miracle Whip on his pasties, he put's it on everything. Not mayonnaise, has to be Miracle Whip.

Have a wonderful Labor Day weekend everyone! It is still so hot down here, wish I were in the Copper Country.

By Jeanie of Westland, MI on Friday, September 1, 2000 - 03:39 pm:

I agree with *Florida on Friday*, never, never gravy or catsup on a pasty. I like a little pasty with my mustard, thank you. They go together. Everyone to their own liking.

By Florida on Friday, September 1, 2000 - 09:05 am:

Gravy on a pasty. Yuk! But I must put a vote in here for mustard, not catsup on a pasty.]
