Back in the winter of 1942-43 the war effort was in full swing. The Standard Station in Eagle River would be facing the realities of rationing and heavy Spring snow. While the gas stamps (and the gas station) are gone, the snow hit us again this weekend, just in time for Fitzgerald's season opener, down at the end of East Main Street, around the corner on the beach.

Edie and I had the distinction of being the first guests to walk in the door Friday night, and I was able to grab a minute video before any of the other diners began to arrive. The low light in the restaurant lets you see the dunes of snow on the beach, which may still be here when some of you arrive in June.

On his way out the door in the third photo above is Jim LaMotte, whose name-branded Baked Beans we enjoyed with the delicious Pulled Pork, topped off with a slice of Jim's heavenly Key Lime Pie. Wow. I'm still stuffed, and that was day before yesterday. Jim's son Mike manages the establishment these days, along with Mark Rea and a friendly efficient staff that always makes you feel welcome. They'll be open Friday through Sunday from noon til 8pm until mid-May. Still carrying on the tradition here in Eagle River.

Have a good week :o)

Charlie, looks like you and Edie were having a romantic dinner, just the two (2) of you in the place. I have yet to go there for dinner. Looks great.

It wasn't long before the place began filling up, in spite of the snow. Several of our neighbors stopped in, and some of the folks passing through town to see the deer, which are pretty numerous throughout the village this time of year.

Good to see that one of our favorite spots is open for "summer"
business. We'll be sure to stop by next month. Hope the snow will
be melted by the Memorial Day weekend.

Thanks for the video, Charlie.

Greetings:

In the Eagle River 70 years ago, "Standard Service" photo does the back of the photo indicate who the person is/was holding the packages? Perhaps the "Standard Service" was the Post Office back in the 1940s.

Lightning arrestors 20 years later? Insurance law or a traveling sales person?

Boy, that view hasn't changed much in 90+ years. That's what I love about the place. JT,I believe the post office was just across the bridge to the left, and its still there too.

My husband and I have many great memories of the
Eagle River Inn. We would always choose the room on
the end facing the river as it flowed into Lake
Superior.

We always enjoyed our dining experience as well. It
felt as if we were on a cruise as one is so close to
the water.

Hope to return there soon.

Be careful on the lift-bridge....Today is the first day the workers are back. They might be on the bridge itself. Please, be careful and take it easy as you cross. Thanks.
