Good morning, Bob. Maybe they got snowed in again.

By Charlie at Pasty Central (Chopper) on Sunday, December 30, 2012 - 10:42 am:

Better late than never. Some lingering holiday complications have slowed some of these morning updates, but here we are with another Shoebox Memory, this one from Paul Meier, a glimpse of life in the U.P. in the winter of 1916...

To paraphrase an old saying, When life gives you snow, go skiing. (or sledding). Here are two photos from my Grandfather, Fredrick J. Haun. These were made in the front yard of their home on A Street in Raymbaultown. The subject is my Grandfather's kid brother Louie Haun who was 11 years old. The boy on the rear of the sled is an unknown friend or cousin. Kids were pretty resourceful back then; a pile of snow in the yard was a good place to practice for the real thing on Swedetown Hill.

The bottom shot is a photo of my Grandfather c. 1916, as a well dressed sportsman with his dog. This could be in the "bush" around Delaware. Anyhow, this was evidently what 20 year old guys wore back then.

Have a Happy New Year,

Paul Meier
Thanks, Paul, for the treasures you share with us here at Pasty Central, as well as a number of U.P. websites that explore this region we call home. We have admired the photography of your Grandfather for years, and it's amazing just how much he produced.

Have a good week :o) ...and a Happy 2013!

It's always worth waiting for, Charlie!
Thank you, Paul, for sharing times from your family's past. Sweet faces and precious doggie!
And those ICICLES!

Great story, and I remember doing that as a kid. Or, we'd be king of the hill. We'd make a ton of snowballs and see how long you could remain "king of the hill" before somebody beat you out of it with their snowballs. So many fun times...so many memories!!

Thanks so much for sharing! Thanks for getting the page up and running, Charlie. Wouldn't have wanted to miss this for anything.
