Amen, Nancyd!

By FJL (Langoman) on Wednesday, July 4, 2012 - 09:19 am:

Happy 4th to the greatest Country in this world. But I wonder if our Founding Fathers are still resting easy.......

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Wednesday, July 4, 2012 - 09:31 am:

Amen, FJL, on both counts!

By Eugene Zuverink (Zube) on Wednesday, July 4, 2012 - 10:10 am:

I don't think they are FJL

By sometimesyooper (Nancyd) on Wednesday, July 4, 2012 - 10:27 am:

I do think our Founding Fathers are content. They knew that government is a fluid institution and needs constant change and dialogue - hence the Constitution. Did you know that originally there was discussion about making George Washington aKing? It was quickly dismissed, one of the reasons being he had no children of his own, his children with Martha being from her first marriage. Therefore there would be no heir to inherit the throne. So things change. What makes this country great is that we, as a people, have a vote and a say in its direction.

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Wednesday, July 4, 2012 - 11:07 am:

Nancyd, the way my history book tells it, George Washington flatly refused to become a 'king'. Now as far as our Constitution is concerned, today, unfortunately, it is hanging by a thread! When a woman asked Benjamin Franklin what kind of government the Continental Congress members gave us, his reply was "A republic....if you can keep it!" Fellow Americans, we have been 'socialized'.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Wednesday, July 4, 2012 - 11:57 am:

Happy 4th of July, everybody! There are some spectacular pictures in today's slideshow! I have a flag AND a pole, but I haven't been able to get my husband to put it in the ground. Frustrating!!

Hope everybody stays safe today. And thanks to our military, past and present, for making this day possible!

And Shirley, what a true statement. So very sad :-(

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Wednesday, July 4, 2012 - 12:23 pm:

An 'after the fact lightbulb' went off in my head just as I 'clicked' Post Message. Benjamin Franklin's answer came about after the Constitutional Convention...not the Continental Congress. Sorry about that. My high school History teacher would've been very disappointed if I hadn't corrected myself.:)

Love today's photos and happy July 4th to everyone! Certainly hope it is a safe one everywhere. Dryness, wind and people everywhere with illegal fireworks make for a bad combination here in the woods. Although we enjoy the "shows" we are always thankful to come out of it in tact. This year is particularly challenging due to dryness, heat and wind. And personally I am looking forward to medicare and social security! Nothing sad about it!

By sometimesyooper (Nancyd) on Wednesday, July 4, 2012 - 01:29 pm:

See, isn't it great that we can have this open discussion and
still all be friends? God bless the USA.

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Wednesday, July 4, 2012 - 03:28 pm:

Amen again, Nancyd! :)

By DEAN SCHWARTZ SR. (Lulu) on Wednesday, July 4, 2012 - 04:50 pm:

God bless and guide us in the day's and month's ahead of us. We need to go and remember the word's "We the people". My flag is alway's flying and I"m alway's thankful of the Men and women who served to keep this country FREE. Wishing all had a safe and joyful 4th of July.

By george piker (Asturgeon) on Wednesday, July 4, 2012 - 05:16 pm:

nancy and shirley. put it on the political
pages if you want to incite arguments.

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Wednesday, July 4, 2012 - 05:26 pm:

George, I have no argument with Nancy or anyone, just the opposite. After all, today is about our country's Independence and what has made it great!

By jbuck (Jbuck) on Wednesday, July 4, 2012 - 05:34 pm:

Happy Independence Day!

God bless America and the men and women who fight to
keep her free!

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Wednesday, July 4, 2012 - 06:31 pm:

Near as I can figure, no one is inciting an arguement or hostility towards anyone else, it is July 4th after all, and this is the What's UP page. I say let freedom ring (and I'm not even 100% American......... ;-)

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Wednesday, July 4, 2012 - 07:06 pm:

Amen, Capt!

By mickill mouse (Ram4) on Thursday, July 5, 2012 - 05:21 am:

HEY DEAN; In your posting, July 4, 2012 at 4:50 pm, you have the word 'men' in caps and not the word 'women'. A typo maybe...lol.
