This is the 1000 foot freighter, the Mesabi Miner, as it arrives in the Marquette Harbor near Picnic Rocks and is proceeding to back up towards the Ore Docks there. Mike Schneider was on hand, camera ready and made this comment after watching and snapping these photos: "And you thought you had a hard time double parking." No kidding, Mike. Makes parallel parking look pretty easy, too. :->

Mike's second shot is a wider view of the scene, showing the calm of the water, with the cloudy unrest in the sky, as the clouds were rolling eastward out over Lake Superior that day. Thanks for delivering the harbor right onto our desktops like this, Mike.

Nice pics!

That pillow-shaped cloud to the right in the second photo is spooky!

Beautiful photos....just beautiful. I am constantly amazed at the beauty of the Keweenaw!

Sorry to interrupt such a sunny photo with sad news, but I did
see the obituary for Daryl Laitila in today's Gazette. Many
pasty cammers have interacted with Daryl through the years. I
didn't know her that well, myself, but she was always helpful
and interested in promoting our area's heritage.

Here is a link to the obituary:

By Alex "UP-Goldwinger" (Alex) on Friday, April 27, 2012 - 12:45 pm:

My condolences to the Laitila family.
I did not know her personally, but her name is definitely recognizable from this website.

By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Friday, April 27, 2012 - 01:07 pm:

Daryl, I'm so sorry for your family loss!

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Friday, April 27, 2012 - 01:09 pm:

So sorry for Daryl's family's loss. We just never know when a loved one is going to be 'called Home'! We weep, but the angels sing!

By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Friday, April 27, 2012 - 01:13 pm:

With much remorse and regret I apologize for directing my condolences toward Daryl. With respect and much sympathy I re-direct my sincere condolences to Daryl's family. Daryl contribution to PastyCam will be a big void to fill!

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Friday, April 27, 2012 - 03:10 pm:

Whoa, that is some sad news!! I knew Daryl a little and I can say she definitely had a passion for learning Copper Country history and, of course, was a whiz at computers and the internet. Many a time I talked with her about setting up internet service when I couldn't figure it out. You'll surely be missed here Daryl, but at least the "Big Guy" upstairs now has great internet support.....

By FRNash/PHX, AZ (Frnash) on Friday, April 27, 2012 - 03:24 pm:

Very well put, Capt. Paul (Eclogite), I couldn't have said it any better!

By Erica - Florida Keys (Erica) on Friday, April 27, 2012 - 08:07 pm:

My sympathy to the family of Daryl Laitila. I hope you find some
measure of comfort knowing that so many people admired her.
She will be missed.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Saturday, April 28, 2012 - 11:58 am:

May I also extend my sympathies to Daryl's family. She will definitely be missed. And that really was very well said, Capt.

On another note, awesome pictures AGAIN, Mike!! I love them!
