Today's photos by Melanie Hakala Rossi, are sure to make you smile. Her first one shows two snow people, looking like your typical tourist visitor, standing in front of a local landmark for a photo op. In case you don't recognize it, that's the Upper Entry Lighthouse, located near McLain State Park in the background. Melanie actually snapped the photo from the Houghton Breakwater side of the entry. Her little snow people are just so smiley and happy looking, they just lift my spirits every time I look at them. But then again, why wouldn't they be smiling... they're in the Keweenaw!

By the way, we added a fourth photo today, a scene you would find if you continue on out the peninsula. It's the view from the webcam at Sunset Bay, at sunset last night.

We're also keeping an eye on the Marine Traffic report to see if the boats return today.

The first two pictures look a lot like Bob & I!

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Thursday, March 15, 2012 - 07:52 am:

Ahhhh, that's so sweet, Janie:)

Love the cute pictures today!

That's exactly what that picture did. It made me smile. Have a great day, everyone.

Lot of open water showing. Time to get the shipping season going?

By Kathyrn Laughlin (Kathyl) on Thursday, March 15, 2012 - 08:11 am:

Hello
We are really in a different weather zone down here in troll land. I had my windows open yesterday after I got home from work; it was in the high 70's yesterday.

Frankly, pleasant as it was, it makes me uneasy to have it this warm in March. I don't like hot (i.e., over 85F) weather.

By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Thursday, March 15, 2012 - 08:12 am:

I read the Mesabi Miner is set to depart Duluth-Superior tomorrow. Let the shipping season begin!

By Eddyfitz (Eddyfitz) on Thursday, March 15, 2012 - 08:19 am:

The Twin Ports shipping season begins Friday, when the Mesabi Miner departs for the Presque Isle Power Plant in Marquette with about 55,000 tons of coal from Superior’s Midwest Energy Terminal.

While that first shipment from Midwest will stay on Lake Superior, that will not remain the case as the company continues to develop a European market for its low-sulfur coal. Midwest sent 380,000 tons of coal overseas last year. It already has orders for more than four times that amount this year.

I love the snow people today!!!

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Thursday, March 15, 2012 - 10:32 am:

The snow people are really cute, in front of the lighthouse! I noticed this week that the Copper Harbor Bay, from Sharon Smith's webcam, looked like that bay was all open water. But, from what I can see, the Portage still seems to be frozen pretty well solid.

By Alex "UP-Goldwinger" (Alex) on Thursday, March 15, 2012 - 10:53 am:

Nice couple... like ships passing in the night. But alas, soon their hearts will melt.
Speaking of ships, thanks for the update Eddyfitz. A good sign indeed.

By sometimesyooper (Nancyd) on Thursday, March 15, 2012 - 12:06 pm:

OK, now I am smiling. :)

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Thursday, March 15, 2012 - 01:50 pm:

I'd say those are a couple of 'fair weather friends'....here today and gone tomorrow!

By Therese (Therese) on Thursday, March 15, 2012 - 08:00 pm:

We had 18 inches of wet snow in the Harbor Springs area 12 days ago and it is almost all gone. Ground is dry and we are beginning to see grass fires; we need a lot of rain to keep the forests from going up again. Further south I see that the Ann Arbor area had a tornado -- in mid-March! Am praying my brother and sister-in-law are Okay: she was going to his office to pick him up after the tornado went through since he rides his bike into work, and the NOAA site says the town is flooded.

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Thursday, March 15, 2012 - 08:52 pm:

We're having severe weather here in the Ohio Valley, with torrential rains! I'd rather have snow. :(

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Thursday, March 15, 2012 - 09:12 pm:

I was just going to say that I pray that all of our Pasty cammers and their families in SE Michigan are safe tonight! There is some video footage posted on freep.com of the tornado at Dexter that is pretty interesting, from a couple of hours ago.

That's interesting, Therese that you had snow, but now you have wildfires. A number of counties in the LP are either under Flood Watches/Warnings, or Flash Flood Watches/Warnings. I know the river here was above flood stage from the rain we had here just a couple of days ago, without the big storms tonight.

By Alex "UP-Goldwinger" (Alex) on Thursday, March 15, 2012 - 09:30 pm:

Marianne...thanks for the shout-out. Not a lot happening in Troy, MI this evening.

By Mike Schneider (Upmike) on Saturday, March 17, 2012 - 10:05 am:

Love the creativity! Very nice Melanie!
